Hitting Harder

As the title suggests, what can I do to swing/hit harder. And I don't just mean push ups, weights etc. I want to know what kinds of drills, hip rotation etc. I can do to strike harder.

Build heavier, more well-balanced weapons. My 20 oz 36s hit quite a bit more significantly than my 15 oz-ers.

Second for Arrakis' suggestion. If you want the hit to be harder, make the weapon heavier. A heavier, well-balanced sword isn't usually much more difficult for you to use than a lighter one, but it will hit with more authority. It may seem counterintuitive, but you actually have to be stronger to hit hard with a light weapon than a heavier one.

read the old castle sca and the beletrix sca books and postings. they are filled with how to generate power effectively and quickly.

the basic of the 2 readings is, use largest muscle groups for power and small muscle groups to aim.

so when you swing, take a step, rotate hips 10 degrees, not much more or openings start happening. the rotate the shoulders an additional 10 degrees. now the arm starts going forward, use this to create a whip action with the weapon. the forearm does the last bit of aiming at the last 25% of movement. all this happens really fast. start by doing slow work to get everything going in the right direction. then once the timing and muscle memory have taken effect, do some 3/4 speed drills, and finally full speed.

i don't know your size or fitness level, but you should see a major increase in power, with no loss in speed. also accuracy problems should go away as well, especially if you are very precise in your training. do not accept a practice swing that doesn't touch the exact spot you wish to hit, i use tape for this, works great.

Lets not forget the simplest way,Strike thru your target as if you where trying to cut it in half.

Exp. Your target is an arm,you focus target should be somewhere on the body under the arm.



Follow thru is another name for what I'm trying to get across.
If this doesn't make sense, hopfully someone can explain it more clearly.

If I hit you too hard I am sorry. It was late and I had been drinking.

There is one feeling when you are able to block or avoid your opponents swing while delivering a kill shot.
It is quite a different feeling when the shot you just delivered has enough force behind it that you know if it was a real fight. Your opponent would truly be dead. Fast is good, fast and powerful is great.

PS. the look on your face when they blindfolded you and handed you my sword was priceless. Your comment was epic... "AW ****, is this one of Blackhawks swords? ****!!"

There are 4 of them so enjoy. but i believe he teaches it pretty well. and just because he is amtgard does mean anything. Ben swings/stabs to cripple people. we keep talking about how he must have a bunch of three legged tables in his house. :)

One thing that I've found that has helped me in a specific situation is using a whip-like motion from the recoil of a high shot to generate power. Generally this happens when I throw a short cross. If I think I can close distance effectively and my opponent has agressively blocked too high, I'll occasionally return to a normal sword block via a high sword side position (basically with my hand by my ear - which, I know, is terrible form). If the opponent's shield is still too high, it is relatively easy to close range while rotating slightly out on the shield side while whipping down behindtheir shield from the very high position. The result tends to be an extremely hard (but curiously glancing) downward shot to the high-middle of my opponent's back, just below the base of his/her neck. I'm thinking that the power is generated from the dropping movement in my sholders, facilitated by the fluidity of the recoil - but I'm not really sure. Just wondering if anyone else generates power this way, and if the idea is applicable in other situations.
