red and buckler

Postby alchemy » Tue Mar 24, 2009 3:24 am

Hello again everyone.
I was thinking about using a buckler ,about 13 by 13. I use 5' to 6' reds ,and always have a dagger.
Problem is i need something for those wrap shots, i'm desent about blocking strait shots with my cross hilts/ handle. So what ya think. Is there anybody that does this already, or is it just a bad idea.

A wise decision...not only good for shot blocking, but also for downing those pesky arrows. Yes, it has been done, and is being done. But thing is to try to kinda forget it's there in melee, and not ~try~ to block with it, just let it ride and do it's job. The only thing you should have to activly block is arrows.

It's a very smart idea to use a buckler if you're fighting with a red sword. I don't know why, but for some reason strapping a buckler to your arm is a magnet for swords. People see the buckler and they want to hit it instead of your arm.

Awesome. I use a sword down, almost as a reversed grip hockey stick, so its already going to be there. arrows are one reason im doing this . i got hit in the nuts this past sunday, by an  and right away a red sword bashes into the same one. i think its bruised :eyes:

is there anyone inperticular who is known for this style?

There's this one guy named Sleeper that likes fighting with big red weapons in Dur Demarion. Maybe I could talk him into getting a buckler, because that sounds like a good idea...

Both Forkbeard and Magnus of teh Red Hand are both known to fight buckler and red. I would say that Magnus is prolly the best known for it in the west. If you have questions about it I would ask either of them.

I can't really think of any in the East. At least not that regularly fight with red sword & buckler.

Mygan, Arky, Xiao and Killian are all badasses with a red, but I can't really recall any of them (except for Killian, maybe) fighting with a buckler on a regular basis.

Yeah dude, that'd be awesome if you could drop by. Snotbelly (who is sleeping on my couch at this very moment) speaks very highly of you.

I've only seen koom fight once in the last month or so and that was because it was opener... I think a buckler would be a good idea... I was fighting with a red the majority of practice this week also and was shot with an arrow more than a few times by Iliak(spelling?) and kato. I see the benefits of having the buckler strapped to your arm.. I have seen Arioch use one more than a few times and it seems to work well for him. I think with the size of red that you use plus a buckler would be effective.

Derian, your list of good eastern red fighters should include Soth.

Th red fighters I've seen most effective are aggressive and often utilize the field to avoid archers. I'm not saying the buckler won't block a good number of arrows for you. Just that if you go off alone, the target appears on your chest that much faster.

I dont recall ever seeing a buckler and a redsword used effectively, i would like to see it. IMO a buckler hinders wrist movement making those useful overhead helicopter swings difficult as hell, in effect giving you a disadvantage if anything. but thats just me, i am sure it can be done. infact, i remember seeing Goat do it but i was unable to watch him closely. if you want free flowing movement, especially a six foot red, a buckler will stop you dead in your tracks. but some people compromise for the added protection. ofcourse i have been wrong before.

Sleeper, you need to make it to chaos wars and meet Magnus. His red and buckler skills are fantastic.
