strap or punch

I want to know what is better for a beginning level fighter with a bit of experience, a strap or punch. I am thinking of making a 30-32 inch round shield. I am 6 feet tall and weigh 230 pounds. I dont have excellent footwork and not a whole lot of shots. The shield I am currently using is a 23x34 inch strap tower.

You sound like you're a big fighter. You can use this to your advantage by using force. (not the kind Jedi or Sith use) Shield checking/bashing, kicking opponents' shields, and other forms of Belegarth-legal bullying will get you far. A strap shield would serve you better than a punch shield for this reason, unless you have a strong left arm and a very strong wrist. I'm not sure what kind of shield you should use besides recommending a strap over a punch. A 30-32 inch round shield would protect you better than what you have now, but it won't leave as many shots open for you to take.

As for your weapon, a 30-32 inch sword would probably be best, unless you require the extra range of a longsword. That way, your sword is small enough to close in with while not being too small to perform normal shots.
