Axe Shapes

Postby Thomas MacFinn » Fri Jun 19, 2009 4:36 pm

I'm thinking about making an axe. This is a fairly common axe design (not my work):

Does the "V notch " beside the thrusting tip serve any purpose in our sport? Does anybody use it in any way?

I would strongly suggest everyone familiarize themselves with the search function on this forum. Most of the questions you could ever think of have been asked by somebody in the past.

It looks like it would be hard to use that thrusting tip without the top of the striking edge connecting.

Would that sort of design be legal for a poleaxe?

Not the blade it's self necessarily, but the stab tip on the back side of the blade. Would that work for a red? or would that be failed because its a bit too dangerous.

If you make it safe then it passes, if you don't then it fails.

Gotdang, hoes!

IF IT GETS SWUNG AT A FIGHTER, IT'S NOT A STABBING TIP. STABBING TIPS (GREEN, CLASS 3) ARE ONLY ON THRUST END OF THE WEAPON.

Just make a really short axe head or hammer head and make sure it passes the hit test, *.

I know it's treated like a red strike or a blue because its swung, but from what it looks like in the picture, it's built to resemble a stab tip. I'm not saying it is one, but it looks like it has about the same construction / shape / hit surface. It could even be a really thin hammer. I don't know. I'm going off of what the picture looks like.

My only question was if it were safe or not based on such a small hit surface compared to a longer bladed hit surface. I get the feeling that if i stuck that on a six foot poll, my haft padding would get a workout and that it would get failed by anyone who recognized the possibility when checking.

What i will probably end up doing is turning that end into a shield hook, and putting an axe blade on the other end. I was just curious as to the safety of the small hit surface thats all.

Just use all blue to build up the length from the haft (no perpendicular core in the head, I mean) and add marine/open until it passes for hit. Preferrably, build the whole back side of the "haft padding" around the "hammer" portion to striking legality and cover the lot of it with cloth, so hits that land with any of the back edge are actual hits.
