my weapon combo

Postby linkicecold3000 » Wed Sep 09, 2009 8:05 pm

im wondering if this is a very good weapon combo
two axes (17 inch tall with 5 inch blade)
and a sword in sheath straped to my back just in case in case i lose an arm (cause the axes are worthless if you only have one) or i want to start grappling my opponents weapons and have a bit longer reach. (the sword is about 2 ft 9 inch and is just a regular blue sword like the ones found on geddon.com)

FTFY.

Best advice: pick a style that you enjoy. As you fight, you'll find out what works and what doesn't.

As Dane mentioned, you're going to soon find out that axes, back sheaths and scythes aren't really viable weapons (trust me, they're not) if you want to be an effective fighter. If you don't care about being an effective fighter and just want to fight to have fun, then you don't need people telling you what weapons to use. Use what you like.

Well, this brings up something that would be valuable for him to know and has been a question in my realm lately. These axes have 5 inch blades. Is that legal?
I know a striking surface needs to be one foot, but without taking that into account I recently made as a gift an axe with a 7 inch blade. We found it safe enough to use during realm/unit practice, but figure we just shouldn't take it to a national field.
Observation: The dag mods seem to be afraid that we're going to raid their realms, burn their homes and steal their women. That's ridiculous, I would never burn their homes.

They're both (probably) legal. Here's the relevant rule:

1.4.1.5. The minimum overall length of a Class 1 is 12 inches plus the length of the handle and pommel.

As long as the blade + haft padding, if necessary, is => 12", you're fine.

axes worthless? :axed:

I always saw a distinct tactical benefit in hooking the opponent's sword with the beard of the axe, then twisting the haft, locking their sword in, and overpowering them. Hell, my favorite hand axe was strong enough to hook and pull away shields (Alas, it was stolen by an Amptguard fighter at a drunken house party).

Maybe I haven't fought anyone with the proficiency to exploit the axe's weaknesses yet, but I would humbly interject with my meager (compared to Derian) Belegarth experience that axes sure aren't speedbats, but they aren't as worthless as scythes...

Axes seem to be pretty useful when hooking coreless punches here in CA. It doesn't work against heavy shields, but the people who like them use the axes with a sword and switch them around behind the shield as needed. I would say these are at least as useful as a dagger, if not more so due to reach.

Nah. Daggers can stab, and stabbing is awesome.

You could put a stabby on an axe if you really wanted to....best of both worlds.

Short axes are fun and will certainly teach you footwork...
