Advice for a Lefty

Postby Caleidah » Sat Jan 16, 2010 5:30 am

Hey, all.

In preparation for Wolfpack Opener, I want to get out of the patterns that I've gotten into. I rely pretty heavily on two shots (same side wrap and high cross) and I've been trying to break that, throwing in new shots. The problem is that in fighting, I end up defaulting back to those two shots almost every time. I still get kills, but against vets they end up being simos or I end up getting ganked as they read those shots.

In general, I'm looking for things to focus on and practice that will make me a more versatile fighter and get me out of the rut that I'm in. Thanks in advance.

I hit this same problem about a year and a half ago. The trick to breaking it is deliberately practicing other shots, and forcing yourself to throw them. Also, increased emphasis on footwork, range control, and fighting rythm.

If you're really having problems focusing on doing this, start calling yourself dead every time you open with those two shots (neither of those shots should be openers). I posted a reply to Bo in this forum somewhere a while back if you want more detail.

The thing is, for a lefty, it's not so much about which shots you throw. As long as you have the toolbox (wraps chops crosses and retiques), you don't need to worry about which shots you throw, you have to throw the shots that the situation calls for. The trick is when and how you throw them. The difference between a 'B' lefty and an 'A' lefty is range control, timing, footwork, etc. Bad lefties and good lefties throw the same shots, it's just a matter of throwing them right. Took me a while to really get that into my head.

Oh, one more. As a lefty, you should be stabbing a lot. Put some greentips on your swords, and use 'em. It's one thing that not enough lefties do. We get stabs giftwrapped, if you learn to take advantage of it.

That was gonna be my advice. Body fake a cross and then hook stab in the gut, all day long.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I've been in the process of rebuilding weapons and stab tips are being added. I'll be using this stuff and getting help from Calarn to try and put it all together.

I'll refer to him as "Sir" Calarn when he starts acting knightly on a regular basis.
