Training Exercise

Postby Sir Thurat » Sat Jun 26, 2010 10:22 am

Ok, so a long time ago someone posted a youtube video of a guy explaining some sort of sword training technique that involved, like, this pegged pole. The pegs were angled, and the goal of the exercise was to increase your accuracy. I've googled and searched, but I can't seem to find anything like it elsewhere.

Anyone remember what I'm talking about?

No, we all stopped caring about youtube after people getting "rick rolled" became popular.

Step 2: look at all of the * videos
Step 3: Contribute
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit

But really, I would love to make something similar to what I saw in that demonstration, but don't even remember its basic construct outside of the vague description I gave in the first post.

I do know what you're talking about, Thurat. It was in one of the stickied threads, I believe, but I'll look around and see if I can find it.

Modern version:

Go buy an Everlast bag: http://www.everlast.com/Free-Standing-B ... fo/EVFSHB/

Mine was like 70 bucks at Walmart.

Put X's of tape on spots that correspond to target locations you want to work on shots to, i.e., put an X at the spot that would be an onside hip, the spot that would be offside hip, a spot where you want your offside pocket stab to land, and the spot that would be onside shoulder.

Hit it.

To continue with what Arrakis said, start by swinging slowly, feel the way your muscles move as the weapon move toward the target. Work firstly on good body mechanics, then slowly build up speed until you can his the same spot over and over with force and accuracy. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Thanks for the replies guys. Primarily, I'm looking to start training my off-hand. I have been trying Florentine out this season, along with fighting lefty sword and board, but my control of my left hand has failed to improve beyond minimal muscle control in basic swings and blocks. I'm going to switch to off-hand single blue for awhile, as that has been recommended as well, but I wanted something to do off the field that would give me additional practice.

Try working on doing other things outside of fighting with your left hand. Try using a butter knife or your spoon in your left hand. Work up to doing more complex things like brushing your teeth (more directions to move) and while doing that, fight with sword/board with your left some. The more you use your non-dominate hand the faster you will learn how to control your motions. Now, it will never be AS good as your dominate hand, but you can get it close.

I'm a lefty and there's a LOT more than basic swinging to fighting left handed. There's totally different shots and blocks and strategies to fighting as a south paw :)

BC, what is it you study for a living? Non-somethingerother physics?

Some lefties fight simply. You fight like a Buddhist monk.

It's not simple, just more refined. Hand-matching rarefies fighting down a lot, and it really lets you focus on the individual matchups in terms of rythm, timing, and technical skill. It's kinda cool.

I'm doing Condensed matter physics but i might have to take some time off from school due to money issues.

If you look real close i only use like 4 or 5 shots which is why i say lefty fighting is pretty simple.

Ahh, that's right. Anyway, I guess I need to find some vids of you or something, cause watching you in person, it looks like you just do whatever you want and the other guy dies.

Leg chop, arm chop, arm wrap, crossover shoulder, crossover leg. You'll find that a lot of good fighters have a small number of shots they use to get most of their kills.

Thats pretty much it just link them together in little combos and mix up the angles they come in at.

And mix in some sweet trash talking skills, in BC's case.

Hip wrap, arm wrap, arm chop, leg chop, lefty cross, high slot, sword-side hook stabs. Catch me throwing something else against a righty, and you win a prize.

It's not about throwing lots of shots, it's about throwing them right, at the right time, in the right way.

Fair enough. It's that "right stuff at the right time" part that takes so much work...
