Frosty's S&B

Postby Frosty » Mon Jan 31, 2011 11:30 am

Ok, it's time to put my glaive down for a while. I need to expand my fighting into the other areas of the sport.

After spending some time sparring and small field battles at Muxk Mayhem I feel like my defense is pretty decent, aggressive shield work: I don't know how to move further, but my knowledge of opener shots, stabs, and raps is lacking. I don't know how to improve on it.

I find I wait for people to make a mistake and punish them for it but often than not the higher caliber fighters I go up against pick me apart before they Present an opportunity.

From Spyn: Your guard's too high, your stance is too narrow, and you cross too much. :P

As I fix Frosty's SnB, we'll post the issues and solutions for public benefit.

Throw safe shots that you don't think will actually land on a target with the intention of drawing some reaction or moving their defense in some predictable fashion.

Learn to body fake.

Damnit Derian I just shot hot coffee out my nose. :D worth it tho...
I'm not master, I've been fighting for years tho, consistently S&B. I learned a lot of wrong things pretty early on, and am currently rebuilding my technique from the ground up with my left-hand. One thing I suggest, and keep it in mind when you're fighting; use your shield like a weapon. It doesn't do damage, but it can help you win fights. Me personally, I'm a huge in-your-face, press-fighting, half-brawling, shield-kicking-and-kneeing *, so if that's your style I suggest get in close, quicker than quick and put that shield into their sword-shoulder or hook their pommel or shield-edge their shield. Get in and get mean.
Instead of fighting sword-shield-sword-shield with a strike then a static block of the shield on their return, turn it around; shield-sword-shield-sword. Throw a shot with your shield, block their strike with your sword, or if you stuffed their sword arm, then go thru their shield with some well-placed pommel hooks and power-strikes. Like using your glaive!
Hope this helps, and hope to get some feedback from you as well! I'm going the opposite direction; it's time I learned how to use a glaive, and I'm starting off with a 63" one.

My best advice in general for any fighter trying to improve a skill set is to go back to the fundementals. A lot of veteran fighters seem to forget simple things like proper stance, etc while trying to build into more complicated technique.

Start with the basics, and see if you've lost a few fundementals, then go from there.

More specific to you, Frosty, your guard is sometimes too high. This gets even more exaggerated when you rush. Try to force yourself to keep your sword hand lower (or fight against a lefty till your sore hip makes you want to guard lower). When you rush, remember to keep your guard up like they are attacking you until you are close enough to strike.

I used to fight a lot more patient, and would run into similar problems with vets not giving up any openings. Make them, either with your shield or by moving at an angle.

Hope that helps.

Best advice I ever received was "move when you throw." A close second was "lower your guard, widen your stance, and don't cross so much." The joys of living in Dallas / Amtland - you almost always get correct advice.

Remy. If your going to go the mini glaive route like I did do your self a favor and start with one about 70" . while it may not seem like much of a difference between your 63" glaive but it will give you so much more openings as far as line fighting goes and will still keep it very much 1v1 viable. I wish I had picked up a 70" glaive instead of my 66" just my 2 cents.

Torry you pointed out one of my biggest problems. my guards to high.

Thanks to everyone that posts i read them repeatedly so as to soak it in better and improve, as practices are an hour drive for me

Bending a little more at the knees helps me keep my guard down, when I remember to do it.

Frosty, what you wanna do is work on keeping your guard low. It'll help with sword-blocking your sword-side, and keep your shield over where it belongs. Good luck, dude!
