When fighting someone with a shield would it be ok to sidestep to there shield side sort of pull the shield away from them (not hard) so that I could stab them?

Yep. Or you can do it hard. Or you can kick the corner of their shield to open them up. Or you can charge and flatten them and then kill them.

Make use of the resources at your disposal at your local practice. There should be a lot of pretty good fighters hanging out at the Dur-D Sunday practice during the summer.

By the way - since you were hesitant about grabbing the shield, you should also know that you can grab the handle of your opponent's weapon, or its pommel (but not the blade). If you read and understand the restrictions on grappling with armor in the rules, then you can block your opponent's weapon, grab their wrist with your free hand, and then kill them. Whatever you do, keep your opponent's safety in mind. This sport is much more fun when you don't crank people's joints the wrong way.  Exception I just remembered: Thou shall not grapple archers.

You can grapple archers if you can trick them into dropping the bow and arrows.
To the OP, you can and should do everything you can think of to kill the other guy. He sure as **** is about to shield kick/edgde you in the chest/bash you to the ground/ and stab you in the groin and laugh as he move on to your freinds.
