Suggestions to improve footwork?

I was wondering if people had suggestions to help improve my footwork. I have improved on it alot this year atleast with my stance but I still find myself going back to old habits which make me trip or or limit my side to side movement. I'd also like to make my movements more quick and fluid (as to help removed the flinch/predictablity of my attacks)

Any suggestions/tips that people have? Thanks!

Learn some basic classical dance steps. The box step waltz is the one that made the biggest improvement for me. It'll help give your fighting a sense of rhythm and train your lower body how to move in relation to someone else.

You have habits that make you trip?

Practice moving the right way. Whichever way you're going, the foot closest to that direction leads.

Jump rope.

To clarify, the footwork I go back to doesn't necessarily make me trip.. it just makes me more likely to do so (though, i've gotten good at getting back up pretty fast with alittle flair... but.. that doesn't always work XD)

Jump rope huh... Get my legs up... got it.

Walk through the motions of footwork you want. If you want to throw a wrap with an off center step, do that. Or whatever combination you want. This will help drill your body into proper responses.

I throw a philosopher's stone in chalk down on the pavement when I practice on my pell. I do slow work (like, stupid slow) with heavy rebar and make sure I'm moving on the diagram properly. You could try a triforce if the philosopher's stone is too weird for you.
Jump rope helps a lot.
Stop putting all the weight on your front foot then letting your back foot drift up off the ground to keep your balance. Just stop that. Bend your knees, grip with your toes and balance on the balls of your feet. Move around and with your center of balance.

Yeah, putting too much weight on the forward foot has also been an issue and I actually.. actively think to stop doing that.. but I find when i'm thinking about it.. I mess up and my other defenses slip and let people get the kill.

Also.. never thought of drawing a diagram under the pell stand to work on other kinds of footwork.

I need to start using my pell too....

just go outside, every night at your house, and practice fighting but while running sideways and different directions. Enough practice and you'll be running circles around your opponents. (if you don't have a sparring partner, just imagine one)

I don't know if running around in the dark backwards and such is a good idea...

Mayhaps a lil' late to the party, but Tai Chi has helped my footwork by leaps and bounds by teaching me better stance and balance. It's also made me a little more graceful as well.

The gym I'm going to gift myself a membership if(when) I get straight As in the Welding Program, trains MMA fighters in Thai boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jutsu and Tai Chi as the main focus for competitive MMA fighters.
They also teach FMA for disarming but I think a lot of people don't realize just how brutal Tai Chi can be. It's a great way to learn footwork as well as condition your body and mind.
I took tai'chi for a couple months and learned some cane, spear, sword and open-hand. My teacher told me I have 'big chi' lol
