The bat's slightly larger blade profile could be seen as a disadvantage, but otherwise I'd have to agree that it doesn't seem to have any disadvantages vs. a sword. Bats last longer, have more stable stab tips, and can open you up to a wider shot selection with less work on positioning. As far as shield tech goes, I can't say that I've seen more punch shields on the field, but I've definitely seen a lot more coreless shields. They're safer in aggressive shield use, they're lighter, they're more customizable, and they require less upkeep. Their downside vs. a cored shield would be their lack of rigidity and, to an extent, their weight, which makes them easier to manipulate compared to a cored shield. To go further in depth on either is beyond my understanding or skill with the tech at this point, though.
