Battle of Strathclyde Photos (Western Canadian Mini Event)

Postby Cib » Sun May 03, 2009 7:45 pm

Well, we just had our first ever mini event up here. I was hoping for more attendance than what we got, but everyone had a really good time and I would say it was a success! It is amazing how far we have come in the last year!

Well, here is the best half of the photos from the event: http://picasaweb.google.com/AlbertaBele ... ent?pli=1#

Yup, good point. I felt it was safe, so passed it as the rules there confuse me quite a bit.

3.8. Prohibited Armor:
3.8.2. Rigid Metal full Helmet. Partial Rigid Metal Helmet as well as full Helmet made of any other Armor materials are allowed.

What does Partial Rigid Metal Helmet mean? Technically that helm fails, but as soon as a I add even a 1/2" square of armor grade leather to it it becomes legal?

I was under the impression that the intent was to keep SCA bars and Grills off the field and that the main thing to look for was plate over the face / or fully head enclosing metal helm.

Congrats on your first mini-event Cib!

Be happy you got the turnout you did. It looks like you have a good starting group to work with. Make sure that all of your guys are spreading the word and drumming up interest with their friends and families.

By this time next year you could have a 50 man mini-event if you play your cards right...

Actually the helm passing or not is up to the discretion of marshal. Since it doesn't cover the entire head and helms like this have been allowed before, I would pass it.

Looks like everyone had a great time, and that's the most important point. Keep up the good work! And yeah, that's some pretty impressive garb and gear for such a new group.

Yeah, it's probably the weirdest old holdover rule out there, which originally was put in place (20-30 years ago) to keep SCA helms off the field. In practice, think of it as "full face" or could an EMT easily gain access to the person's face and neck without having to move their head, so that helm should be just fine. Looks like the corners on the cheek pieces might not be penny round, though, but it's hard to say.

If you search the boards you'll probably find a dozen different discussions about that rule, why it was created, why it's never been nixed, and what it's actually supposed to mean.

Kinda late, but thanks for the comment Theros, it is quite encouraging!
