Wrong Way Raul wrote:seig, OH....MY...GAWD! hold you mold the leather to the mask shape you want? kinda iffy as to how to do it.

I used the 'FB Oven method' on the so-called "bug-eyed vulture" one, and it was rather easy.
After making the under-plate out of armor grade leather, I measured all of the various distances- top of head to top of eye, etc. and then transferred the measurements to a paper pattern.
After thouroughly wetting the pattern, and seeing if the various bends and creases I planned for it would fit on the underplate, and not interfere with perripheral vision.
I then cut out the leather, preheated my oven to 180 degrees, and soaked the leather in room temp water for about half an hour.
I squeezed some of the excess water out, and, with my fingers, pinched all of the creases in, and, to achieve a rounded shape to fit the underplate, rested it on a non-metal cylinder and stuck it in the oven.
I checked back every twenty minutes to moniter drying time, and to pinch where I needed to.
Because the mask was so small, and it was thinner than armor-grade, it was completely dry in about an hour.
Then I burned the patterns into it with a wood burner, then painted it, then riveted it onto the underplate.
I used veg-tanned leather, which is why this one is whiter than the skull one I did earlier...

Expect my armor to look even more badass next time you see me. (BTW had a blast at WPO, tempted to ditch Rag for Geddon this year...)

Derian is it ok if I use your "apostery" idea? What type of fabric did you use for the "apolstery"? Is it a strechy material sewn into a tube? That's quite raw, very slick looking. As soon as I finish my leather scale mail I hope to make a helmet and I think that the fabric covering Idea would look good.

One one condition: you post a picture here when finished. ;)

It's not stretchy material, it's generally canvas or denim or some other very heavy cloth. I'll cut out my pieces of thick leather, then sew the fabric around it as tight as possible. Pieces can be attached together in a variety of ways (glue, sewing, rivets, etc.) as the aesthetic dictates.

I'm all for people taking ideas and making new things out of them.

Of course Derian no problem. I will get right on that project after I finish(finish used loosely. I have to still rivet all 150+ scales on to the base.) my scale mail that has been in the works for a month now and two belt flags. So maybe in a 3 weeks I can have it done. Good thing tandy has a half off sale!

So as fun as that last fighting mask was, the small flaws in its construction are becoming more apparent as the weather heats up more and more- So I have begun yet another armor grade fighting mask, suited for Summer combat.

Image

The undermask, which is made from heavy duty 14 oz hardened leather, form fitted to my face. The holes are more intertwined, granting even better visibility, while still brushing off shots to the eyes from full draw arrows at ten feet with no pain. I put in a lot more breathing and ventilation holes. The yellow part is soft elk leather for the bridge of my nose...

Image

The second layer- I was going to make another skull, but decided against it at the last minute- I cut the eyes way large, and made the jaw much longer...

Image

And a look at what the final layer will look like. The bridge of the nose will be drawn inwards, so the eyes will be a bit bigger than what it looks like here. The upturned parts at the corners of the eyes and mouth will be wrapping around lengths of knotted leather cord, giving the look of a flayed face stretched over a torturer's mask in a contorted grimace.

I'll post more as I go along.

btw- I love this thread- Great work everyone!

But that's my opinion on the STYLE. The CONSRUCTION is great and your did a great job.
