Yes, yes it was. The few folks out there in no garb were walk ons late in the day. Most of the day we had everyone at least attempting garb (the exceptions were like the female in the green tabard over tshirt and jeans).

Really impressive overall - one of the largest one day events I've ever been to. Well run, things kept moving, with pretty steady fighting.

Oh, and the green dude - yes, he was a target. The silly guy should have realized that it was cold. Shrinkage. Nuff said.

I liked this guy

Oh, and here are the prizes I made for the event. I made double linen, heavy cotton trimmed belt sashes with the designs made on photoshop, and then dye-sublimated onto them. I actually like how they turned out. Pressing, Ironing, and Sewing took about three hours for 15 belt sashes, so my station looks like an ungodly mess.

Image

Image

Image

I did sashes for the 4-man, Single Blue, Florentine, Sword and Board, Archery, Reds, and the Cheeseheart Award. I originally did all of them by hand, but after I was done, the comp I was using crashed, and I could only recover the single blue, florentine, and 4-man designs. The rest, I was forced to use other artists' work, but I gave credit for their work (plus these were awarded, not sold), so I hope there aren't too many hard feelings~!

I'll post the original files once I can find them...

PS- the right-most two on the second pic are replacement sashes for two champions from the Second Battle of Andor last year.

PPS- I also wanted to thank Anduril for hosting such an awesome event, and thank the many vets who trekked down from all corners of the west to rock our worlds- My realm-mates have been gushing about how much fun they had! Another thanks to the photographers- I may replace my venerable kitten avatar with one of their shots of myself!

What's with the pictures on those sashes? They are **** aweful and I think illegal.
Modern prints are not legal to use in garb.

i see them as a representation of a page from an old time book. that is how they are styled. i feel that is acceptable for a belt sash at least. if they where printed full size onto a tunic on the other hand then id have a problem with it.

What's with the pictures on the sashes? Other than a thick-ass trim, not too much else- seriously though-

While I feel simply aweful that FB dislikes my little creations, especially considering how much I charged for them, in the spirit of the interwebs, I feel I must defend my little cloth strips with a few counter-points-

Please excuse the pedantic tone, but did linen exist back in the Middle Ages? yes. Did sewing exist? yes. Did oil paints exist? yes. Then, yeah, these sashes are absolutely medieval.

But I hear ya already- "Stieg! You **** Butt-tard! They didn't know about shading, perspective, etc. in the Middle ages!" Aside from arguing as to when exactly the middle ages ended, I would grant such an argument, then ask why anyone who has had a modern immunization shot is allowed on the field. Its a suspension of disbelief that every single person I've seen embraces at their convenience on and off the field, in order to make the game *gasp* fun. If I ran around to every camp at Chaos, speaking peasant-French, throwing horse heads into tents, and ripping cats' toes off with pliers to announce my presence, I would certainly be medieval, yes, but probably not well liked.

And I hear the other argument- "Stieg! You suck foreskin cheese! You used a computer to design the sashes and a printer to print them out, and a huge heat press to apply them!" True, all too true- I did use a computer program released in 2009, a year which, barring Third World countries, is definitely not medieval. However, given my meager artistic abilities, and access to oil paints, brushes, etc. I could very well have painted designs onto sashes in a similar (almost exact) manner. Given time and materials, I could have easily done sashes using Medieval processes.

"Then why didn't you, Stieg?" Well, unfortunately, this is the Modern World, where I must design, paint, and sew these in between being a full time student with a job (which is nothing compared to fighters who have families, drug addictions, etc.). I find that I have to carefully mortgage my time, as does everyone else- so if I can save time while slightly repaying Ana, Darth, and the others for running a free event out of pocket, and giving my fighters a great time, I will. How long would should someone work on something that was going to be freely donated to a one day event? - I remember Forkbeard saying something in another thread that carried the sentiment of, "the way they did things back then isn't always the best way to do them today," when arguing for plasma cutters over cold chisels when cutting steel plates.

I wouldn't have even bothered with such a long-winded keyboard * if it wasn't Forkbeard calling out the non-medieval-ness of it, but for him to complain about using a modern method of making a medieval piece is slightly disheartening. Imagine someone complaining because the cow used to make his awesome leatherwork was given growth hormones. I don't really care if he thinks the art itself is **** or not- I tried to appease a broad spectrum of tastes, and even some of the recipients were dismissive of their contents, but cut me a break here.

You busted yourself, there.
These are not medi eval in ANY way. They are a monern-method produced, modern art display.
Don't get it wrong, You did a great job. If I ever want an oil painting of myself, I'll call on you.
But these belt flags look like t-shirt logos framed into belt flags. Modren **** prints are not allowed, what part of that do you not get.
We're I at your event, I would not accept one. And I sure as **** wouldn't wear it as garb, becuase it's against the rules.
The fact that the original pictures were painted by you make no difference. If you hand painted a tunic to look like a metalica t-shirt, or embroidered yourself a hockey jeresy looking tunic(hey GCA *), it would be gay, you would be a homo, and I would say so.

Fork, if you argue the way you are then the COMPY symbol ya'll use is a modern print too. Its a symbol from a GAME in the 20th century. It is however, a depiction of a medieval/fantasy symbol and is thus permitted on garb. Using that same depiction these are drawings of a MEDIEVAL/FANTASY period. They are a depiction of the time period and are thus permitted. The no modern prints rules is intended to keep Metallica t-shirts and Hello Kitty **** off the field. Not someone wearing a small "painting" of the time period as a belt sash. C'mon man. Nice Job Sieg.

I completely disagree.
The skull we use has been changed from the Warhammer version. It is also a flat, stylized emblem, not a full color morern portrait. But if Belegarth felt that it was too modern, we would change it in a heartbeat. How can you think we wouldn't.
Also I disagree about what you deem modern print. These were pnnted out on a computer. Not hand panited.
Even if they were they are inagruably of modern design. Can anyone argue that there was painting of this kind done in pre gunpowder civilisation? And on cloth? for wearing on your **** belt?
Please, Par, get a grip. What you are saying is that a metalica t-shirt is illegal, but if I hand paint a metalica t-shirt, it's not? Cuz that's what I'm hearing you say.

FB, I really think your argument could only apply to the Vader flags. Par's definition here is spot on, your definition would exclude far too many things. What about things embroidered by machine? It doesn't matter anyway, because these flags can be turned, the opposite side only has the lettering. You could still wear them if you were awarded them and they wouldn't ruin anyone's medieval experience. Meanwhile, the rest of us would be sporting the hot fighting fantasy chicks which look like they have been painted anyway. They were well-made, well thought out gifts donated freely to our event and I am sure they took a lot of time. Try to have some perspective.

Sieg, thanks a lot for these, they really look great on either side and we'll always be happy to have them.

EDIT: A quick Wiki into Medieval Art will show you some interesting tapestries that I feel easily demonstrate Sieg's designs are well with in the limits of what could have been painted at this time (See King David at the Harp).

Let's keep in mind that I'm just stating my opinion here.
Since what is and isn't considered modern is up in the air, ya'll get to do what you want.
I get to use it as an example of what I think is just on the worng side of the line.
Seig, you know I respect you as an artist. You do very good work. I'm just saying these aren't medi eval looking in really any way. They look like hip, very modern Bel garb.
Garb machine emdoiderd to look modern, like the Golden City Allstars jersy's in Amtgard, are also totaly modern in my opinion and have no place on the field.
I think we would do well to change our garb wording to more fully define modern images and prints to keep this kind of stuff off the field, but that's another thread.
Stop derailing this one with this. I'm sorry I brought it up. This is what I get for being bored in the morning. I should jog more.

Fork, you have good points and this discussion NEEDS to take place, but probably in the WC Gen. Forum.

I'm not saying that the metailica logo is medieval at all, and I'm certainly not saying if you paint it on something you get to wear it. Where I'm coming from is that the pics used (minus vader) are at least DEPICTIONS of the medieval/fantasy era we claim to represent. There's no arguement that these were prodeced in a modern way. But I would argue so is almost EVERY peice of armor out there, all of our garb, and so forth. I interperet modern prints to mean any print that DEPICTS something modern. Like Hello Kitty, Metalica, the Budwieiser logo and so forth.

I know you didn't ask me..but..it's just a symbol and people who aren't really into the Star Wars thing aren't likely to recognize it as such.

At this event the Sith were universally garbed up and seemed free from all things blatantly modern (save for footware, eye glasses, and light-saber pommels on their boffers.)

MY opinion of logos is in the thread in the war council forum about keeping belegarth medi eval.
This thread is about awesome event pictures. And how I want to get to know Darth's sister.
I hate that guy's helmet. I had to fix one for someone already. The crappy pakastaini stiching fell apart and the face isn't armor grade.

Cut the guy some slack, he's been playing for three months and doesn't know where to go if you want to get the best helmets around yet....

But you know, after I show him my new one and where I got it from, I'm sure he'll come around wink wink wink Fork.

And about my sister well....how much did you say the armor work was gonna cost again?

Tsk- I'll just screencap some low res video stills from the Lord of the Rings movies, put them on sashes, and randomly hand them out at Chaos~! :p

Seriously though, if the only valid criticism raised is concerning a process of making sashes, then this year's Battle of the Ring is indeed a huge improvement over last year! Thanks everyone for the compliments, and thanks for an interesting and gentlemanly discussion on the subject- It provided good reading, despite the derailing of the thread.

Torix- you should post some of the pics that you posted on your facebook here- many of them were pretty good.

Incest aside, I forgot to thank Darth's kin for showing up and basically cooking and cleaning for the feast!

All of a sudden this thread has more incest than a George R.R. Martin Book? Special.
And where are the pics of Bhakdar, Sipris, Huma and Dangus? I don't care about any thing else, I just wanna see some Babylon vs the World pics, ala when I went down with Huma and there was only two of us. And we still great.

Yeah, Andor's held several war councils to vote on weather or not to ban him from the realm for various misappropriations. His real name, which everyone calls him, is Puck, or Bad Puck (Good Puck being a kobold we met at Chaos). I also remember him making the naughty list for the Battle of the Ring. In many ways, that picture does suit him fairly well.
