I need help with pricing.

Postby Sideways » Sun Mar 12, 2006 12:10 pm

I'm relatively new to belegarth, but I have a strong scupture background.

I recently made a few foam weapons and took them to our local practice, people liked them and told me they would buy them from me.

What would be a fair price to ask, I'm afraid of asking too much, because I'm new and I want the group to like me. However, I don't want to * myself over by asking too little.

Currently, I havent sold anything yet. How much should I ask for a 48 inch sword with no stabbing tip, a 10 inch handle, and a fiberglass ski pole for a core?

Also I have a 36 inch mace with 1/2 inch pvc core.

Both weapons were made according to the online instructions available to me.

Any suggestions on pricing?

How much did you put into them? that is how much they are worth. add up the cast of foam and materials. then add some for the time you spent on them.

http://www.edhellen.com/

They sell really good stuff so i would say sell it for a bit under what they are asking for it.

Thanks for the advice, I probably put about 12 dollars into the supplies for the weapons, and maybe 2 hours of work, excluding drying times. I'm thinking of asking 25 dollars for the sword and 30 for the mace.

they look nice, but if they're you're first weapons i wouldn't sell them for nearly that much. first weapons don't tend to last long. if you don't count time spent on them, you'd be asking for approximately a 350% profit.

......

I've been making weapons for a little over a year, and though I haven't sold any yet, I plan to soon. For a weapon that cost me about 6 dollars and an amount of time to make.... I would feel horrible if I sold it for over 10 dollars.

Then again, I'm cheap and full of empathy for fellow college students.

Seriously though, it's common for first weapons (especially if you have no experienced person with you) to fall apart quickly.

charge what you think it's worth though... or at least, charge what you can get people to pay.

I agree with you Magpie, I do feel bad charging much more than I paid for supplies, especially when I don't know how well they will hold up after some heavy use. Whats the usual lifespan for homemade weapons?

that depends on how well they were built. I still use the first weapon I made. I have only had 2 of all of mine break down. and both of those were because of stabby tips. I would have to see it to say. but if built well they can last for a good long time.

The real reason I am thinking of making weapons for sale is that I need to think of some way to fund the armor I am planning on making. If I didnt need the cash for that, I would just charge for supplies, cause its a blast making weapons.

Nice work. Those cloth covers sewn on, or taped? I can't tell from the pics.

well edhelen weaps last awhile longer than homemade weapons but their covers break quickly. Your prices were good, id say $20-25 since they are your first but they look good quality and your second back should sell well.

What would you charge for a mace of the fallowing characteristics?

Flanged, like the above.

Black cover.

Striking surface for 1 ft (maybe just a little thicker striking surface)

Stabby.

Non-striking for about 1.5-2 ft.

Handle for 6-8 inches

Sorry to ask for a price when your just kinda figurin' it out. I'd make a suggested price, but I don't know much about pricing either.

How the hell did you put a stabby on a mace, and how much did it cost you to make.

Lol, I havn't. Wish i had. I was asking him if he could. I don't know if it could be done with a flanged mace, but with all others I'd just take half of a foam football to make it come to a bit of a point, like a spear would. Use a big one for a larger diamater, or a small one for smaller ones. probably a smaller football for a flanged mace.

ask Laectuath if they will take a picture and post it of their mace with a stabby. It isnt flanged, but it works well. No worry about broadsiding, and good for poking around a shield. :)

here's a general idea of what we charge around here... (these are all blue foam of course)

pvc blue sword: $10
fiberglass blue sword:$12
pvc mace: $8
fiberglass mace: $10 (these are both barrel maces)
fiberglass flail: $12
pvc flail: $10

as for a flanged mace? probably around $12 if it was pvc

maybe $14 if it's fiberglass

and add another $3 for stabby

so like $17

Hey, would you mind shipping me one of your fiberglass flails? How much do you think it would cost (I live in Union OR 97883) If you want, you could just tell me how much they weight, you zip, and I could do the calculating. I have been wanting a flail for a while, but never actually thinking that I had the skills to make a proper one. Thanx. :)

wow grey i think that's rediculously cheap. why don't you start making weapons i want to buy them. I would pay more for a fiberglass sword than that pvc club.. just a thought. i think 18 to 20 for the club and 20 to 23 for the sword depending on how well built

well the higher price for the flanged mace is for the hand sewn covers which are a pain in the * by the way

and if you want weapons, i would talk to faolan, he's the one who makes most of the weapons.

(i'm not sure how much the flails weigh, but they're nice flails. just ask dacian)

I make most of the weapons in these parts so if you want something I will see about making it.

I hate making weapons that don't pass so if it is out of my expierence range then I probably won't do it. But the weapons I do make are nice and sturdy and should last a bit. (I make mostly blues and am experimenting with shields)

I take my work seriously, so if it doesn't pass then return it postmarked within 30 days after I send it to you and I will give you a refund including shipping. That applies if you just don't like it too.

All my covers are hand sewn so the cover fits nice

Pm me and we'll talk.
