looking for a place to buy some band shoppe poles for some pikes and reds they need to be able to withstand an impact and http://www.bandshoppe.com/ doesn't state the strength of the poles.

I don't know any place that does test their poles for that kind of thing, as that is not what the folks selling them use them for.

I've bought over 12 poles over the past 4 years from that site and have yet to have one break on me. (Sold 6, gave away 3, made 2 glaives and a spear) and I must say LOL to the statment:
band shoppe poles for some pikes and reds they need to be able to withstand an impact and http://www.bandshoppe.com/ doesn't state the strength of the poles.
If you don't want band poles then don't buy them from bandshoppe. Buy Fiberglass poles/rods from max gain systems.

I get mine from http://www.wwbw.com/StylePlus-Black-Fiberglass-Flag-Pole-i149103.music If you order over $99 you get free shipping, which is a godsend wiht 8 foot poles. They don't break.... we tried. Hung a 6 foot guy from one suspended between two people holding it. Another nice thing is that the ends are capped already, no worry about busting through stabby tips. I have 2 and they havn't tipped yet after over 6 months of amtgard, one is a spear, which are like your green weapons, so all i do is stab with them.

Sorry to keep posting in a dead thread, but I just wanted to say that wwbw.com is a terrible site.

We placed an order for about 12 poles back in early July (when they were listed as IN-STOCK and READY TO SHIP) and were told that they would not ship until early August. When the poles never showed up, we made multiple calls and were told that the poles would arrive in September instead of August. As of right now it is mid-September and we have received no notification that our order has even been shipped yet. The poles are still listed as In-Stock and Ready to Ship on the website.

[edit]And we just got another notification saying that our poles won't be shipped until 10/14.

I strongly recommend that you do not use WWBW.com, as my experience indicates that they are a poorly-organized business with no regard for their customer base.

I've been ordering from them for years as my father, brother, and i all play instruments. Its where we get mouthpieces, reeds, even music. I've always gotten very fast service exactly how i ordered it. Not sure whats up with that. It might be your location. Where do you live? They ship out of the Chicago area i believe.

I live in South-Central Indiana. About a 4-5 hour drive from here to Chicago.

Also, while calling to cancel our order we found out that it would be shipped within the next two days. However, considering it's been 2 months since we placed the order, as well as the fact that wwbw pushed the shipping date back by a whole month twice, and that their site has for the entire time listed the poles as available and in stock (even in bulk), I will never go through this company again, and I will continue to recommend that anybody looking for a spear core find a better source. Nobody should ever have to threaten to cancel a purchase just to receive service.

The Air Blade is 39" long and weights 2.35 lbs, might be a little slow but that could be a fun project.

Which material would most likely be heavier, a bandshoppe pole or rattan (say 1 1/2 inches)? I don't have a lot of experience with bsp's. Do they have any disadvantages versus other materials, or are they pretty much the be all end all of polearm cores?

I think the Rattan would be significantly heavier than a Bandshoppe pole. BSP holds up extremely well for spear and long red construction. I can think of no reason to use anything else.

Bandpole will be much lighter than rattan.

Solid fiberglass can be stronger, but it rarely matters. I have seen someone break a bandpole red sword, but by the same token Falkor fights with bandpole glaives and he hits plenty hard enough. It can also get more fragile when cold, especially if going from cold to warm and used right away.

Bamboo can be lighter and longer, but is much less durable especially for anything other than a spear.

There are better options for min-length reds or over 8' cores, but in between bandpole really is just the best.

I've also used wwbw several times without a problem, but not for a couple years.

Just thought I'd write back and say we ended up getting our cores in early to mid August. I wasn't impressed by wwbw's service, but considering that we ordered right before the new semester started, I could see how they could have been extremely backed up. However, they really need to keep their warehouse stock updated on the website. So, if you read my other post and were considering not ordering from wwbw, I would say that if you are ordering in bulk, it *IS* the best deal, but don't have any expecations as far as fast service is concerned.

Cool, thanks for the tips guys. I've pretty much only used bamboo for longer weapons, and they've worked alright but I'm looking for something a bit more durable.
