Not quite a leathersmith yet, but been studying and a very good friend of mine is pretty verse. I'd say you have a fairly easy design there, you could possibly do it yourself. THe hardest part will be setting up the pattern so it wraps around your body correrectly, but even that isn't too hard. Have you considered looking for leathersmith shops online?

Lorica segmentata (which is roughly what that is) is pretty simple to assemble. I'm no leathersmith, but I do know that you want the bands on the girdle piece to be about your belt size-- so if you wear a 36'' belt, I'd cut roughly 36'' bands.

Not to mention, the tools would set you back more than the price of the armor.

You'll pay pretty much what the website tells you you're going to pay. Every other armory that I know of (including the one I work for, the Sable Manticore) will charge you that or more for lorica segmentata. If you add any more colors/details/features to it, the price will go up. My 'boss" Sgt Baker doesn't check these boards, so if you want to commission something from him, shoot him an email at sablemanticore@hotmail.com.

So no one on here makes armor cheaper than what a store would make and sell it for? Sounds kinda bad....

Welcome to life. Quality doesn't come cheap. That having been said, I'm not as sure that everyone here would charge $300 for that.

You may want to take this request to the armoring forum. My advice to you is to offer what you're willing to pay and then negotiate what you think is a fair deal.

If you want the best work I've seen posted to this board, I'd PM Enderonimous. If you want someone who might do it for a very reasonable price, Arioch (aka Goat) might be willing and able.

Not when you take into consideration all the time and effort it goes into making something like that. First, you gotta buy the hide, which can run you anywhere between $80 and $120 depending on where you buy it and if you have a business discount. Then you have to make sure you have all the hardware (which costs as well). Then it's a matter of patterning it, cutting it all out, making it pretty (putting that edging line on it, if you want), dying it, letting the dye dry, fitting it and assembling it. A piece like that could take a week or more to make (depending on if the leatherworker has another job or not). And remember, the more detail you want in something, the more work they have to do. More work = higher price.

And really, the armory you found that armor at does this for a living. Like, that's all they do is make armor. They make it in bulk, which allows for them to charge less than a lot of their competitors. Wolfgaard Amories, for example, doesn't even have a comparable curiass, and their cheapest one is $350 (and they are a full time armory as well). Sable Manticore isn't yet at full tilt (Baker still has a 9-5), but our prices are comparable (if not on average lower) than Schmitthenner.

Kind figured all that, but I was saying something like that detail really doesn't matter just has to cover torso plus the shoulders/upper arms. So its not like I want a replica of that one =P

Oh, and thanks for the advice and all but back on topic please?

It will be a little under $300 from Sable Manticore. You're looking at around $200 for the cuirass and about $60-70 for pauldrons, depending on what style you want. My best suggestion is to email us. You'll either get a response from Sgt. Baker or his partner, Simon. They can give you a more specific price for the style/design you're looking for,

*edit*

Also keep in mind that you are not only paying for the person's time, but the quality of work. All of Sable Manticore's armor comes with a lifetime guarantee. The only things we don't cover is water damage (like if your armor gets wet and you store it in a dark, damp place) and any alterations to it you make yourself.

Shipping is an issue as well.

MY guess, is that if you knew someone local, and they wanted to help you, they could probably help you make it for about $150.

I could probably make that piece for about $120 in materials, but I'd definitely sell it for more. The only thing I'd have to buy us the edger to get the edges to have the little groove, unless thats sewn around the edges. If THATS the case then Id have to charge more because it'd be a ton of work. But right now I don't have the time to work on pieces of armor between school, work, other work, and the Army. But for the most part its a very simple pieces with a lot of wasted materials (which I would charge for) in the pattern. Talk to a local smith to make it for you, so you can save on shipping and overhead.

Huh.... so what are the odds of stumbling across a link to your own unfinished and un-advertised website while browsing the net.

Well, thanks for the props.

Try Fork Beard , Burke,or Fitz no idea what they would charge, but all of them are outstanding Leather Smiths. Burke made me armor almost identical to that not to long ago, I got it in trade though so no idea. they all have accounts on here under those names.
