Period Footware <$50

Postby Oisin » Mon Feb 15, 2010 6:12 pm

Hi guys,

I might have an in on a really good deal getting some period shoes, possibly at unlimited bulk, in multiple styles. Counting shipping and everything, I think it's likely that I might be able to get these to people for about $50 per pair.

Styles:

Late Medieval Laceup Ankle Boot
Image

High-Late Medieval Buckled Ankle Boot
Image

Late Medieval Buckled Low Shoe
Image

High Medieval Turnshoe
Image

Early Medieval (Viking) Shoe
Image

Probably not actually period accurate high boots*
Image

I'd need to be ordering at least 15 pairs for this to work out. Not sure about exact final cost, but it'll mostly depend on what the shipping for the whole order is to me, but shouldn't be too much. I'd guess these will probably have a final price between $40 and $50 a pair, possibly as low as $35, not including shipping to wherever you live (or I'll deliver them to you for no cost at any event I'm at).

*I'm not sure whether the high boots will actually be available, and if they are, they're likely to end up being around $100 or so. More boot = more expensive.

Most sizes available in most styles, colors available are brown (shown), natural veg tan (shown), and black (not shown).

Please email me if you're interested. BAMudd@gmail.com

Clarification: If you're interested, I need to know! Yes, that means you, whoever you are! I WILL NOT be ordering a stock of these and carrying them, I want to put in an order of specific sizes for specific people with commitments prior to my ordering. I'm not a merchant, I'm mostly just putting this up because I want a pair myself and would rather get them at wholesale prices than retail prices, and since there's a minimum order size I thought it'd be cool to be able to pass that savings along to everyone else in Belegarth.

You don't plan to actually FIGHT wearing any of those, right?

People fight in turnshoes all the time. SCAdians, Dagorhirrim, LARPers, WMA folks... Hell, the actual knights and warriors our game is based on wore them at the time!

Heck, I've seen people fight barefoot. Period footware, with a decent insole, can't be worse than barefoot. Personally, however, I am like to stick with my Redwings. I just want a pair for camp shoes and SCA events, and the price is certainly right.

It means it's a juicy morsel to stick in a signature as a quote. The best sigs are out of context quotes, like Arrakis's views on gay love below.

I've been fighting in flat leather soled shoes with just a slip of felt as an insert for several years now. If you're at all accustomed to walking barefoot, the transition should be easy--I am NOT willing to fight barefoot because I want my feet to be protected from the ground (broken glass, used condoms left on the field, etc). The human foot is not some fragile, useless thing like Nike and Adidas want you to believe so you'll buy their ridiculously overbuilt shoes, which more and more studies are showing do NOT help you and most likely cause you to hurt your knees more.

Our feet are the incredibly effective product of 6 million years of evolution (longer if you want to count how long it took the basic structure to develop prior to the beginnings of human bipedalism), and are very good at what they're designed to do . . . once you strengthen up the underdeveloped muscles in your feet that you never use because you wear shoes that coddle your feet and make you walk completely differently from how we were designed to walk.

So yes, I do plan to fight in these, and without a "proper insole" too. Do they support the ankles like combat boots? No, but I don't have weak ankles so it doesn't matter. I like being able to actually feel the ground when I'm walking and I like shoes with thin, unsupportive soles that allow me to use my feet in a more natural way. The bottoms of these have absolutely no traction, which means it's hard to walk on slick modern surfaces like linoleum, but they grip fine on natural surfaces once you learn how to walk in them, even slick (wet and muddy) grass and slippery snow because you can use your feet to balance and grip the ground instead of relying on the rubber traction that never works as well as its supposed to anyway.

Anyway, some info:

The turnshoes, the laceup and buckled ankle boots, and the viking shoes are the ones that are actually going to be available. Cost is $40 per pair plus shipping, which will $7 for the first pair and $3 per additional pair.

I'm working on getting a few sample pairs to test sizes, but they're supposed to be true American sizes. We'll see about that. Half sizes and extra wides are not available, but these are available in up to like size 15 or so for those of you with gigantomassive feet.

Just got the sample pairs in. Sizes are true American sizes, quality is very good.

The laced and buckled ankle boots are also available dyed blue or red, for the same price.

Speaking of not wearing shoes. I never wear shoes anyway. My teachers at school will yell at me to put my shoes on (I carry a pair of flip-flops around with me) and I will but I guarantee you as soon as they round the corner the shoes are off again. :)

I'll see about looking into some of these. I don't really have any money right now though, I just went out and bought a bunch of materials and I'm practically broke now.

Update: The order is going in very, very soon. I've said tomorrow as a cutoff date in other places, but I can probably actually get you in until Monday if you've paid by then. EMAIL ME! bamudd@gmail.com

DO NOT pm me with new orders. Email me the following info:

Belegarth Name
Real Name
Email Address
Phone Number
Street Address
City, State, ZIP (one one line please to make it easier to copy/paste)

Shoe Style
Shoe Size
Shoe Color

At this point, you won't even go on the list until I have your money, sorry, but there isn't really time at this point to sit and wait for people who aren't actually committed NOW.

Thanks!

Update 2:

My actual costs in this are roughly $30 per pair. Anyone from the Bel boards who buys a pair, I'll donate the profits from your order to the fund to help Lady Feri recover from her house burning down. So, at the minimum, that's $10 per pair . . . but if you want to send extra, I'll pass that along as well.
