WTB Roman Cornu

Postby Tiberius Claudius » Fri Mar 12, 2010 10:25 pm

If anyone has one just lying around, I'm interested to hear your pricing. I would also appreciate if you know someone who might make one or if you know of good places to look.

Some history

I've found some out there for $150 and that's way too much, and then there's a couple for about $113 and that's still a bit much.

Thanks much

Wrong forum, dude. Go ask on RAT or the Armour Archive.

In any case, though, the odds of you finding one cheaper than that are slim to none and the odds of it being any good at all are even less. Musical instruments cost money.

I kinda really want one now too. Those things are epic.

Craig's List maybe? Try digging around SCA merchant sites. I have the feeling they'd be more likely to stock instruments.

You could heat and bend some 1-1 1/2 inch copper piping and then find an old trombone or trumpet some where cut off the bell and then solder it to your bent copper and then use a old flugelhorn or baritone mouth piece and solder that in to place. Wha-la crazy * Roman Horn.

Now I can not tell you the mathematic behind this principle, but the length of the instrument determines tone. So, you would have to experiment with different lengths of copper. I would also suggest that to bend the copper you get your hands on an oxy-acetylene cutting torch to heat everything up. Also, I have never soldered or cut brass so I cannot tell you how that well it would work. On the other hand some brass instruments are not really brass.

All i can say is cut it very carefully with a really fine tooth hacksaw and be prepared to make mistakes.

Thanks for the posts,

Yes, I've seen that one from "By the Sword" - too pricey.

I have solved my problem by winning a bid for a Trombone from shopgoodwill.com - altogether with shipping $43.00

I have cut apart the supports and am working on bending the piping by filling it with sand so that the metal won't crimp, and working it into the shape that I need. We'll see how that goes.

Thanks for your interest!
