WTB new fighting gloves

Postby Richard le Gris » Mon Apr 19, 2010 6:33 pm

I am in the market for new fighting gloves (for medieval combat sports) and am hoping to solicit feedback. Right now it looks like there are two broad classes of gloves - lacrosse gloves and MMA gloves.

Lacrosse gloves:
+ Designed for holding sticks
+ Well padded and armored
- Too well padded/armored, and extend past the wrist. Possible conflict with bracers.
- Have to be mail-ordered, no opportunity to fit test.

Examples:

MMA gloves:
+ Good knuckle padding
+ Largely compatible with bracers
+ Relatively easy to come by/locally available
- Tend to have annoying palms (no padding, 'bar' in the padding, bad padding)
- Some models have bad metacarpal padding.

Examples:

Anyone have any opinions/anecdotes/insight on the matter? Pairs of lacrosse gloves I can try on? A better way (such as taping foam to cheap gloves, as Chicken does)? I am all ears. Thanks in advance. Alternatively, if you can make demi-gauntlets/gloves with good dexterity and protection that would fit better with a 1290-1320 French character for roughly the same price shoot me a line. Thanks!

Okay usually I wouldn't have any input on subjects like this, but since I play lacrosse and have used MMA gloves, I think I can be of some help.

With lacrosse gloves, I have noticed that yes, it might be a problem with bracers, unless you designed the bracer to "fit" with the glove. Also, they would restrict your wrist movement, because of how the padding goes up the arm. They do have great padding though, and so that minimize injury.

With MMA gloves, some you can find that aren't as annoying as you might think. I have some without the bar in them, but if you did find some that you liked with the bar, you could just cut it out. Mine doesn't have anything to cover my palm but that doesn't seem to bother me because of the athletic tape I use on my sword handles.

Honestly, out of the gloves that I've used, I love my MMA gloves. So I'd suggest them. The one's that you had on the link looked pretty good, although I think the thumb might give you some trouble. If you choose MMA gloves, I'd consider one of these:

Thanks for the input. I was concerned about the wrist movement in lacrosse gloves since my old SCA hockey gloves totally fail at it, and it looks like lacrosse gloves are lower-profile versions of those. It looks like unless someone puts up a bid for making demi-gauntlets I'll go with MMA gloves.

a topic that kinda discusses gloves and has examples posted viewtopic.php?f=94&t=31535

I've used both lacrosse and mma gloves. when i first got lacrosse gloves i had a hard time holding onto my swords but then i started using wilson tennis wrap on my handles so now i dont have that problem anymore. u can always cut off the padding past the wrist, that's sir cyric does with his. I still switch between my mma gloves and lacrosse gloves so im not sure which i like more yet. just my 2 cents

Gah, I totally remember that thread now >< It obliquely answers pretty much all of my questions. Sounds like I should get two pairs - lacrosse for Class 2 tomfoolery and MMA for sword and board work, and just stick with my glove wraps for archery and related nonsense. Thanks.

I just bought a pair of Century's MMA gloves with the "bar" in the palm. I hit that sumbitch with a seam ripper and lo and behold, it's a piece of fiberglass-reinforced clear PVC tubing. But yeah, I ripped the bars out and they work fine. A little harder to grip my handles than with the mechanics gloves I had been using. *shrug* Way better knuckle padding, though.

They can't be worse than the old Evergel glovewraps with the all-neoprene palms (which, by the by, are shredding off the thumbs). I'll have to see if *'s has a pair on my way to the practice field tonight.
