Chainmaille?

Postby Niall OConnor » Mon Oct 25, 2010 10:32 am

Ok so I want A chainmaille shirt. I need it to be light-ish because I'm not a very big guy. I'm also hoping for cheap-ish being a college student. I know it's expensive but I'm looking for cheaper but I'll understand if there is none. So do anyone of you know where I should shop. Or are there any of you willing to make it?

Make it. Get some galvanized fencing wire from home depot, some high tensile wire cutters/aviation snips, and two pairs of pliers. Cheapest way to go.

I agree with Noik, making it is by far the cheapest way to go. I had pliers already, so I had to buy the wire and cutters. Would have cost me about $50 total for everything probably if I had to buy the pliers as well.

Try like Harbor Freight or Rural King or some other farm store for the cutters.

I really prefer high tensile wire cutters they cut so easy.

Used this website when I was dabbling in chainmaille: http://cgmaille.com/

They have very good tutorials. Although I never made a full shirt, it certainly helped me learn the weaves. If you have never done it before, I would definitely try some smaller endeavors first to practice making even sized rings and closing them properly.

For some other information or, if you decide to save the time and buy rings, you can get them fairly cheaply here: http://www.theringlord.com/. They have uncut rolls as well as precut rings.

Hope this helps

If you belt it properly, the weight shouldn't be too unmanageable. Getting a shirt to fit you properly may be your biggest obstacle.

I would ask/lurk around The Armour Archive. I've seen mail go for ridiculously low prices over there. Make sure you don't get something in aluminum, it won't fly in our game.

A 4 in 1 weave is not too difficult.

I made my shirt while watching hours and hours of movies. :) And I'm not anywhere near an artist, my sister is though...
