Looking for flat ring riveted mail.

Postby Forkbeard » Mon Nov 29, 2010 11:27 am

I want some nice chainmail. It has to fit me(6"5", 260lbs) from mid fore arm to mid thigh.
I'd prefer flat ring riveted but I'm realistic.
I will trade equal value in badd * custom leather for up to about $1000 worth of armor.
Anybody need a new badness?

Sell some leather and buy Icefalcon is all I can recommend. Maybe check on the Archive, though; somebody might have a used set they'd be willing to swap.

Zooloo, buy some flat rings and rivets. Make a Hauberk and then we'll talk. There's no point if the rings aren't riveted. I need REAL maill.
Arrakis, Icefalcon will be where it's from, most likely. Thats why I say $1000 worth of leather. It's just easier to make something of worth if some one specific orders something they want. Me making up what I think people want and will fit them never does as well.
Besides, you never know what people have in their closets. I know a guy who has one of these that isn't exactly period(round rivets) but he only paid $280 for it. Unfortunatly, he's not giving it up.

Fair enough. I didn't mean try to pre-make some stuff and then sell it, I just meant: go ahead and do another k of commissions and put the money aside for maille. But trading skill for maille sounds like the real way to go.

Fork, are you looking for the rings, or completed mail? You can get flattened rings here:
http://theringlord.com/cart/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=37&cat=Overlapped+Jump+Rings&websess=93599565988349

If you're looking for riveted mail from an online company, I could point you a the following:
http://www.kultofathena.com/armor-body.asp
There are many options available, a few of which are riveted. I can personally vouch for the merchant.

Do you have any experience with the quality, Calarn? Because $385 for alternating rows of solid and wedge-riveted flat-ring mail is pretty incredibly cheap. 9mm is large, but they're 17ga rings. I'd love to pick that up at that price if it's any good at all.

Considering an equivalent suit of Icefalcon is twice the price... yes, any experience with the quality? It looks like Get Dressed For Battle is the manufacturer.

It's not cheap but I'd suggest looking for stainless steel maille. In my opinion, the extra cost is well worth the reduced maintenance. Keep in mind that mild steel rings will rust very quickly if not properly maintained or a regular basis, i.e., oiled, kept out of extreme humidity, cleaned regularly, etc.. Once my job situation settles down (hopefully!), I'm planning on purchasing this:

Icefalcon stainless steel riveted haubergeon

Also, from everything I've read on the Armour Archive, he's got rock-solid customer service.

Yeah, I've never heard anything bad about Icefalcon. I did find this little tidbit when researching KoA

http://www.sword-manufacturers-guide.co ... thena.html

Toward the bottom a KoA flack responds. The fact that said flack jumps straight to accusations of libel is a big, fat red flag.

That's an excellent point Kyrian, but out in the desert here where Fork lives, rust is something that happens to other people so mild steel should do fine.

Thanks for that review link, RlG. I have to admit that I got exactly the opposite impression reading the company's response and all of the positive comments from other customers. The reviewer kept his tone pretty neutral and the KoA rep did get a bit worked up, but the facts the KoA rep laid out painted a clearer picture. From all those reviews I wouldn't worry too much about KoA, I'm still interested to hear about the armor, though.

It looks like that shirt is made by GDFB and distributed by CAS-Hanwei. Digging further, I found it claimed that GDFB redistributes chain made by Ulfberth and the quality is perhaps a bit better than most of the Indian/Pakistani riveted mail on the market. CAS-Hanwei's MSRP for that shirt is also $605, so the price is excellent. Now if only I had a spare $385. . .

Try a spare $442, including shipping and sales tax (if applicable, which it is since they seem to ship from their Brick & Mortar store in Elgin, IL).

In my mind, the jump straight to wild libel charges is the sign of someone who takes things personally and is not a professional, but that is just a trendline, not a certainty. They're a reseller with a razor-thin margin, so that would explain being a little high-strung. That would also make sock puppets more likely though (*, I'm cynical...)

I'm sorely tempted to pick up the armor, as there are ways to reduce the rust factor (and mild should be lighter than equivalent stainless), but I'd want to at least line buyers up for my 14 and 16 ga butted mail haubergeons first.

Isk - A fighter from HD by the name of Ender has owned a hauberk of riveted he procured from Kronos (Kult of Athena) for a few years now, and has never had any complaints. It still looks pimp, and has withstood rigorous abuse. I'd have to find out which exact one he has.

I would toatl trade for one of the KoA solid and riveted peices.
That is exactly why I put this ad uip. I figure there has to be some one out there who got one of these on a deal from a freind and doesn't want it. If I can find that guy, He'll want to trade.
Or maybe he'll sell or trade it to one of you and you'll hit me up.
Let's see how it turns out.

Personally when buying something like armor...I don't want a professional guy who is going to stick to the company line. I want a guy with a little passion who is willing to defend his company and his actions. Specially when it sounds like they did all they could for the guy.

Bottom line, the customer isn't always right, and if the guy wasn't portraying their interaction correctly, then he needs to be called on the carpet for it. Kudos for them for having the balls to do it and not fall back on that tired old customer is always right bull crap.

Soon as i get a few bills payed off and am ready to get some new maile, ill buy from these guys.

Why would you want to wear chain in bel? Its not like it gives you anything over leather. I have read the rules, and while this armor isnt legal in bel and would get points deducted in amtgard, I would still recommend it over mild or stainless. If you look at the pictures you almost can tell the difference between mild and titanium, the weight is where it really changes things.

I call *.
Titainium isn't indestrucable. Far from it. If the mail isn't riveted or welded, it will fall apart in extended combat use like any other mail.
It's ONLY lighter. And not that much. A flat ring riveted shirt only wieghs 17 lbs for thigh to mid forearm coverage.
You CAN'T use it in the 2 biggest games that people WHO **** POST HERE play. Big reason it's crap on these forums. And you get penalaized for it in amtgard.
Add all these reasons why it sucks together, then mulitply by the fact that is is more expensive and you get FAIL!!

I didn't know that about Dag. That's pretty **** sad.
Of course it's legal in the SCA, everything is legal when you get no points for it. They wear **** blue picklebarrels.
I stand by my "rediculously expensive for no reason and not stronger" argument.

Forkbeard, I'd check out Historic Enterprise's mail also. Flat ring, wedge riveted, 18 gauge. It's really sweet. I have a haubergeon of Icefalcon's 6mm round, though, and it's amazing. Absolutely amazing. The prices on it now though have skyrocketed.

And, if you use good oil, mild steel mail is not at ALL hard to take care of. I only oil mine like once a month or less and after a year and a half don't have a speck of oil. I highly recommend a product called Fluid Film, google them and find a local distributor. It works wonders, and it's mostly lanolin instead of being petroleum based so it's pretty nontoxic and doesn't oily goo all over your clothes.
