Who wants a commission?

See this tabard? I want one just like it.....Except with a reversed color scheme. Bacchus did an incredible job on these tabards, but I hear word he's pretty busy these days....who thinks they can take up the challenge? He made them 84" long, 18" wide, V-neck front collar, square back collar, double sided (one side duck cloth [canvas], the other side something softer that I don't know the name of. For this tabard, I imagine some sort of satin-like or other lustrous fabric would have to be used for the outside layer, with a reinforced black layer on the inside. Take note, the silver-colored and lustrous fabric is non-negotiable, but I'd be willing to pay the price for it. Also, anyone who can paint on the symbol (will send a graphic) in black onto the silver side would be infinitely more desirable. If you've got any questions about the piece of garb that I am envisioning, please ask questions, as I'd want this piece to be absolutely superb (which is why I know I'm incapable of doing it). Please place your quotes (for the garb, paint job, and shipping). If they're low enough, I may commission more than one, for other members of my unit.

Just a rough estimate would be around $300. Thats satin stitch appliquéd symbol, French seamed and/or flat felt.

I could probably make it for around $150. I wouldn't paint the symbol on though. If you're going spend the money to have it done right, it's better to applique or reverse applique the symbol (paint won't look very crisp or clear on silky fabrics). Do you want contrasting binding on the edges like this picture shows as well?

So I would say $150-$175 (we can solidify price if you want to get ahold of me off the boards) for a double-sided tabard with the symbol appliqued on, including all materials, labor and shipping.

Would you put the symbol on the front? Cause just for the tabbard, I would agree the price would be around $40. But with the intricate applique required, the price goes up.

It wasn't applique. It is paint or silk screen, I believe. I don't know which tabbard that is, but a lot of the unit tabbards were painted by me.

Yes Ana that one was painted by you, and if applique is that expensive...I would just stick with the paint jobs.

So its just a tabbard? The sleeves are from something else? A rough estimate ( I'd have to find a silver fabric and its cost) if this is just a straight up tabbard from me with an aplique symbol is:

40 $ materials
35$ Labor
Shipping( whatever flat rate boxes are now a days)between 5$-15$
————
You're looking at between 80$-90$ depending on shipping

My time frame however wont be until mid June as I am pretty full up until then.

Send me a message if interested
thanks,

Sure, a tabard is cheap. But:

Fully-lined + double-side turnable - less cheap.
Trimmed edges on inside and outside - less cheap.
Contrasting trimmed/appliqued neckholes - less cheap.
Complex appliqued symbol - even less cheap.

So, yeah. Good prices in here. Kevat's reverse-applique stuff I've seen looks mad hot.

This. I figure it would take about 10 hours to complete. Once you figure in my $20 an hour labor charge, that takes it from being expensive to being reasonable.

I had honestly not anticipated such high costs for this piece. The only one which has so far sounded reasonable was Breeder's, although I am sad he in unavailable. I'm not necessarily seeing why the price is so high. I'm not even familiar with the process of this "applique" stuff but I can safely say that I'd be contented with a paint job. I'm unsure as to whether or not people are under the impression that the tabard is meant to be worn on both sides, because it is not, it is a one-sided piece, simply with a second layer of fabric so as to help with the stability of the thinner, silver fabric. And I can't imagine adding a trim to be that difficult, unless there is no access to pre-folded satin blanket binding, or something like it,

Image

which makes adding trim pretty easy, and in fact easy to add on BOTH sides (purchased from Joann's). The other reason why I am surprised is that Bacchus made these tabards for me (minus the painted symbol and not an expensive silver fabric) for twenty dollars a pop. Perhaps you'd all tell him he's an idiot for such a price, but forgive me for getting the impression that the piece could be done for a cost around that area. Also, from this post, some of you might just be inclined to say "well why don't you do it yourself?" And I can answer that with "because I'd rather someone with a much better hand for doing it take on the project," but i've bought fabrics before, and I've made a tabard before, and it was not something I would have ever charged someone more than $40 to make.

And people wonder why, lol.

I commission everything now. Sure, I could get better at making garb with some practice... I'd rather get better at fighting though.

So I'm with you on the "consumer" train. Armor from Forkbeard on the way, garb coming from BadAss Garb. Might even hit up Wynar too while I'm at it.

You weren't clear in your first post. It looked like you were asking for what I posted about.

What you want is a black tabard with trim and a trimmed geometric neck. Why are you asking for a lining? Because that's the way the others are?

I apologize. I want a silver tabard with black trim and a trimmed geometric neck. Yes, the other ones had lining as well. But for this one, I assumed that the quality of the silver-colored fabric would not be as sturdy as something like duck cloth, which is why i specifically asked for it in this one.

Ah, you've specced a lining because you want a shiny satin-type outer shell in silver. Got ya.

Well, that should pull the price down some.

That and whatever seamstress/seamster you end up commissioning telling you that they don't do paint, so you need to handle that business yourself if you don't want it app'd.

THIS, for anyone who is confused.

And yeah, I will just have the symbol painted on after I receive it. What would you then put the pricing at?

Depending on the cost of the silver fabric, it would drop the cost a little, but I don't do garb that is not appliquéd. Not worth my time.

Without the appliqued symbol, I could make one, lined and bound, for $60-75 (depending on the cost of the silver fabric). Even though you don't want it reversible, per say, you don't just have the cost of silver, but almost the same cost again in a lining.

I don't recommend painting the symbol on though. If you use any sort of silky or satiny fabric, it's going to bleed like crazy, even with fabric paint or printing paste (yes, I have done screen printing on satin. It rarely turns out well, especially with intricate symbols such as this).

Re: Who wants a commission?

Postby Breeder » Mon Apr 25, 2011 10:23 pm

Firstly: 20$ for those tabbards sounds like cost unless you provided materials, thank Bacchus for his generosity.

My estimate is based on aplique without aplique and without knowing the cost of the silver fabric I'd say:

Materials : 35$ish ( this is based on the fact that I'd have to get 2 yards of each fabric, and the bias tape, however if you decided to commission them in dmultiples of two you would have to really only pay for mats once for each pair since the mats would be enough for 2)
Labor: Probably 25 without aplique. I charge 10$ an hour for my labor and always round to the nearest half hour. Honestly I'd still reccomend aplique, it looks alot better and my cost is Probably comparable to having it painted (10$ for labor 5$ for material on a simple symbol like that)

I wish I could put you to the front of the line, but its first come first serve with me lol

Hope this helps.

It does, and I will keep you in mind for the job. In truth, I probably don't need this tabard until Chaos Wars anyway, but I'm always looking to make myself sexier. It's the first rule of the Sith. :P I will ask my second in command if he too would like one of these tabards, so we could buy a pair together.

Hell, If you can wait until chaos I can bring it to you at chaos lol that way no shipping, I do however require material cost (and shipping if aplicable)before starting work or putting you on the list, one too many bad experiences with flakes, the labor I don't ask for until product delivery

I can wait until Chaos. By that time though, the order might change from a tabard to a full tunic, depending on my work schedule. But as of now, you're the man for the job, and I may even want to talk with the Sith about having you make one of those awesome banners for us.

Silver fabric can be a * to work with. Charge for labor and durability of material shold be well considered.
