Shield spikes back in the day?

Someone told me shield spikes that actually caused damage were legal at some point a long time ago. Is this true and if anyone can remember them, could they explain the mechanics and guidelines on them?
and finally...
Why, if they were at one point legal, are they no longer in use?

I had a legal shield spike once. I think it was 12 years ago?
It counted as a single green stab.

I'm not sure why they are illegal. Didn't prove to be terribly effective anyway.

Only time it came in handy was when I lost my arm (or dropped my weapon) and I backstabbed people with it.

Must have been a local rule. Shield spikes were never counted in the standard rules, at leasts since I started in the Jurassic period.

The problem with shields spikes was one of playability - was what struck you the shield or the spike and how would you tell them apart? So in the interests of KISS - shield spikes are considered as decoration and not as an offensive weapon.
