Question on Javelins.

Postby Vago » Sat Jun 25, 2005 1:04 pm

The book of war states that javelins must weigh a maximum 24 ounces. This strikes me as odd since it needs to be 4-7 feet in length. I fail to see how physics allows something with that density to fly. Is this a typo or is my brain going to hurt trying to figure out the physics behind this.[/b]

It was decided a long time ago that javelins heavier than a pound and a half (24 ounces) were pretty much unsafe for head shots. It is difficult (but not impossible), to make a 4 foot javelin much under 14 ounces. Multiplying this out for a 7 foot javelin is about 24 ounces. The reason for the 4 foot minimum is that people were starting to make really short javelins (in an attempt to make throwing knives and such).

Currently, most javelins are around 4' in length. Longer ones are more difficult to throw. Though they might make a real nice short spear. I think I may try it out.
