I caught a Javvy in practice!

Now my question is, would this be something legal to do normally? I know if you deflect an arrow with a body part or weapon you take the hit to that location (at least thats what I thought I read) But when I had a javvy coming at me my reaction was to grab the shaft with my free hand and attempt to throw it back. Should I have taken the hit to the hand?

As long as your hand did not come in contact with the head, i.e., the legal striking surface, of the javelin, then you're fine.
