2 handed non-swords

A friend of Mine who has been fighting for many years was telling me that there is a different length requirment for something to count as a red weapon depending on weather or not it was a sword. This sounded slightly familiar, but the rules to me seem to pretty clearly say that everything has to be 4' or longer to be red. Is this a rule that got changed at some point?
