Different sword construction...

I've always been an avid student of ancient sword fighting techinques, especially those of two handed swords. I was flippin through a Museum Replicas catalog and came across this sword:

And then I saw Magpie's thread about making sturdy crossguards here:

I was just wondering, as long as it was adequately padded, could I construct the above sword using the method described in Magpie's post. The leather bound section in between the two crossguards would be non-striking but still have adequate padding.

I just thought this would be a really cool weapon to use and wanted to make sure it would pass before I attempted construction.
