Javelin "sufficient force"

Postby Moginheden » Mon Aug 24, 2009 1:22 pm

We have a bunch of Javelins but no arrows yet. With the rules for arrows the attacker calls the shot because they can be too soft to be felt.

Our Javelins have the same problem. People aren't calling hits to their legs/back because they don't feel the impact.

Should thrown javelins be called a hit by the attacker or victim? (held javelins are obviously the same as a spear and called by the victim.)

edit: the problem isn't that the victims are sluffing it off, it's that they don't know they were hit at all. When the jav is soft enough to hit in the head and it hits an armoured back it doesn't make enough impact to be felt.

They're called by the victim. Arrows are the only thing where the attacker has the ability to call.

That said, javelins also do not have a sufficient force rule, only a deflection rule. If the javelin deflects >30 degrees, it's a hit. Basically as long as it doesn't just whiff you as it goes by, it's a valid hit. Heralds should be calling it if people are sluffing them because 'it's too light'.

That being said, javelin throwers should call off shots that did not hit with the tip of the weapon.

I think I see the disconnect here.

The convention is that javelin throwers call "point" or "shaft". This alerts the victim to the fact that a javelin hit something, without presuming to call a shot. Not perfect, but it works. It also allows javelin users to call off their own shots if they were no good. This is how I've seen it done at events and the like.

However, if he calls point, and you disagree, you have the right to ignore him. He can't call the shot.

True.

He's just wondering what the etiquette is for jav throws to the back when they're too light to feel (which is pretty close to always). There's no sufficient force rule, so they count, but how is one supposed to know they've been hit? Answer, the thrower would call "point" to announce it. After that, if the victim disputes the hit, the thrower is **** out of luck, and a herald intervenes if necessary/able.

But yeah, Jimmy's right. You don't get to "call your shot" and have it respected the same way an archer does. This is just a convention to ease what really is a frequent problem.
