I have a few questions about archery:

1. After hitting an opponent, are you supposed to call the shot ("leg", "arm", etc.) immediately, or are you supposed to wait to see if they notice it on their own before calling it? Different people in my group have given me conflicting answers to this question.

2. My understanding about the "half-draw" rules in the BOW is that the mapping between range to target and allowable draw distance is discontinuous: i.e., if you are under 15 feet then you have to half draw, while if you are at 16 feet or more then you can full draw. However, I was recently informed that this is actually not desirable: that in fact the recommended draw distance varies continuously with range so you should only draw full draw if he is like 40 or 50 feet away. In fact I was informed that the recommended draw distance is the MINIMUM distance necessary to reach the target at the range he is at: e.g., if I am shooting at a target 30 feet away, and I draw, shoot at the target, and the arrow mises him, travels by him, and lands say 20 feet beyond the target, that means my draw distance was too long. Is this correct? This is another thing where everyone I ask seems to give me different information.

3. Is there a minimum weight on arrows? My hypothesis is that if it were possible to make an arrow that was lighter, that it would go faster and thus be harder to dodge or block, but would still hit with the same amount of force.

There is no minimum weight on arrows, and since there is also no suffcient force necessity, the lightest passing, 'safe', arrows you can make are desirable.

Since I'm part of the group you've been getting conflicting answers from, I'll go ahead and let some outside opinions post on your first question. For #2, I'd appreciate it if you'd PM me whoever told you that so that I can speak to them privately. It's downright wrong, and I want to stop any misinformation from spreading in my realm. Your 'discontinuous' interpretation is correct.

1. It is generally accepted to be good form to wait and see if a person feels and takes the shot before you call it. Archers are supposed to call their shots for clarity, not every single time.

2. Full drawing someone from 16 feet is perfectly legal. People may * about getting shot full draw from that range, but as long as the arrows are safe, there shouldn't be a problem. However, be very sure on your ranges, and err on the side of caution. Generally if you are at 16 feet, full draw isn't necessary unless your bow sucks. Use common sense.
