Sword Blocks

Postby Dyn » Tue Mar 01, 2011 10:48 am

My apologizes if this has been asked elsewhere - after searching manually and using the engine, I couldn't find the answer.

So while reading the rules I found it says "Blocking a Weapon strike by laying a weapon against a Target Area and/or Shield is illegal". A friend of mine went to Wolf Pack Opener and came back saying that you can block by resting the blade against his free hand. I was curious how this works.

EDIT:
Thanks.

This is what is referred to in our game as half-swording. It is generally accepted as ok to hold your own weapon, even by the blade, to block. So what he is saying is generally accepted as normal practices. This is very different from holding the sword over you shield or arm and saying the shot was no good, that is anviling.

The rule that makes this acceptable is the hand on weapon rule.

3.1.5. Hand(s) - Area below the wrist (exclusive). An empty Hand is a legal Target Area. Any Injury to the Hand is considered Injury to the Arm. A Hand on a Weapon or Shield is considered part of that Weapon or Shield.

Since weapons can never take damage, a hand holding a weapon can never be disable as a part of the arm, regarless of where that weapon is being held.

Adding a little more to Par's post. You must be in control of said weapon do do this, if you are not then you must take the arm. You cannot grab the striking surface of your opponents weapon.

What Kage said is the current "accecpted" method of taking that hit, but there's an argument to be made for not having to take the hit until AFTER your hand loses contact with the weapon. All in all its a pretty grey area.

Arrakis PMed me this morning and said that the above is a bit confusing. Kage is right. The current interpretation is that you lose your arm if you grapple an opponents striking surface, and thats how the game should be played. What I was attempting to say is that by a hard line reading of the rules, it COULD go either way. Don't play like that though, its bad. Its one of several things we need Codified in our rule set.
