Swinging a weapon while holding Striking?

Postby Blitz. » Mon Mar 21, 2011 5:51 pm

Were having a little debate right now in my realm about swinging a weapon while holding onto your striking surface. The Weapon were talking about is a quarterstaff. The Fighter was legged, and then switched his hand onto the back striking surface of the quarterstaff and would swing it like that, to give him more reach. I've searched the boards and this is the only thing i was able to find about it.

This is what is referred to in our game as half-swording. It is generally accepted as ok to hold your own weapon, even by the blade, to block. So what he is saying is generally accepted as normal practices. This is very different from holding the sword over you shield or arm and saying the shot was no good, that is anviling.

Now this is talking about blocking, but since your in control of the weapon, does your hand not take damage of a strike, since it is on your own weapon, and a hand on weapon doesnt take damage? Or since its a weapon on striking surface does it take damage when the weapon is swung?

Edit: It just dawned on me that this would be alot simplier to understand if i posted a Picture, since this debate still hasnt been closed. I'll try to get one.

I'll give you the short answer: Can he do it by the rules: Yes. Should he do it: NO. Will most marshalls call him out on it because it's not safe: Most Certainly.

I agree that it could be unsafe, depending on the range of his opponent, how large the handle is, and how far down the striking surface he was holding it.

However, what if a double-ended weapon were held in such a fashion and used to thrust? I don't see this as necessarily being any less safe than using a spear in the same fashion.

I think a loophole has been discovered in the BoW that ought to be closed.

I see no issue with the action itself. I don't really see how it's unsafe. It's perfectly legal by the book. If the person in question was hafting people and hurting them, then that person is being unsafe, and should be stopped by a herald. As long as he's hitting people with the padded part of the weapon, his totally within the bounds of the game.
