This is what is referred to in our game as half-swording. It is generally accepted as ok to hold your own weapon, even by the blade, to block. So what he is saying is generally accepted as normal practices. This is very different from holding the sword over you shield or arm and saying the shot was no good, that is anviling.
Now this is talking about blocking, but since your in control of the weapon, does your hand not take damage of a strike, since it is on your own weapon, and a hand on weapon doesnt take damage? Or since its a weapon on striking surface does it take damage when the weapon is swung?
Edit: It just dawned on me that this would be alot simplier to understand if i posted a Picture, since this debate still hasnt been closed. I'll try to get one.
