Leather thickness

Hello. Noob here. I have a question that is not found in the rules or I just can't find it. Since armor only grants +1 and it not that big of a deal since some people play without any armor....why does leather armor have to be 12 oz thick minimum?

TO gain the advantage of armor, there has to be a disadvantage. The disadvantage is weight, thus the requirement for thickness.
