What is a throw? (Grappling)

Postby Akroth » Mon Nov 12, 2012 2:56 pm

3.6.3. No throws, unarmed strikes, or joint/nerve holds.

At a recent event, there was a discussion about throws. One of our members who does MMA, judo, etc. demonstrated a move where you could grab someone's weapon arm, duck down with your back to them and pull their arm forward/down to roll them over your shoulder onto the ground.

Is this a throw, or is this a valid grapple?

How do we define a throw?

controlled takedowns are the only legal throws. A judo throw like you describe might be legal, but would have to be executed very carefully, so as to not to hurt the person, equipment, or anyone nearby. The person would have to be supported through the move.
