Well, it doesn't work that way. It is either you let all of the younger fighters play, or none of them. We cannot discrimanate between individuals, weights, or hight; we can only discrimanate by age. It is the only demographic that is fair to use as a limiting agent.

Let me try once again to put this argument to rest on a scientific basis. Knowing that I have a degree in Kinesiology (the study of body motion and mechanics/health) scientifically you are not mentally as developed at 14 as 16. Your reaction time and situational rational times are slower than someone who is 16. They do not become fully developed until 18. That is a FACT. So this can cause you to not on purpose but on accident not make good decisions in a place that can become very dangerous fast. There is no real argument about size vs. height. If that was true many people here could not fight, end of issue. On the issue of growthplates, yes you are not fully done with the epitheal plates until 18-20, so there is the possibility of stunted growth.

I think my real problem with the whole younger age restriction is what happens at events other than fighting. There are many temptations out there and sometimes I think that people of this age are not really equipted to necessarily make the best decisions. Before you critize me for saying this I work with HS students.... I am a teacher. There is a marked difference in you average HS Junior/Senior than in your average Freshman/Sophomore. I know you all will say "But what about me ... I am mature enough...." Great then, I am glad. I am just talking about the most case scinero.

Thanks for your time

I think the age restriction is good. It keeps little whiny kids out of events.

Cuts down on hard hit complaints too.

Satanaka was right - raise the minimum age to 18 and end the argument!

No, I'm not serious. Just tired of the whining. Now make some swords, hit your friends with them and come fight at an event when you are sixteen.

Jeez, I can't believe that this has stretched out so far. I'm gonna turn sixteen next spring anyway. Why should I even care at this point?

That said, I can understand that, scientifically, kids at the ages of fourteen and fifteen have slightly less developed motor skills and are less physically developed than those at the age of sixteen. Also, I can understand that the older half of the spectrum of fighters is afraid of injuring participants who are smaller than themselves. However, I am still going to stand by my previous argument that there are exceptions to every rule. A majority of my realm is an exception to the rule. They have all read, signed, and notorized their waivers. They have fought on the field against other realms and have become reasonably experienced. They have been injured, and have still decided that they wish to fight. They are all fully capable of fighting on the national field.
At this point, the only difference between 14-16 year olds and the 16-18 group is that the older half has cars. Whoop-de-freaking-do-dah.

I'm not gonna push it from there, seeing as how I already am gonna have nine or ten responses saying that I'm wrong.

Also, I seem to have the mark of death on me from Mr. Satanaka over here, so I don't want to rush the inevitable. :P

Maybe we should make the age restriction 20. That seems to be a good even number, and I don't think that most of the vets will care... :P

Different realms have different rules for their fighting age. That is cool- BUT at a national event or at a large event where people are coming in from other realms- I don't think it is safe.

I try to gauge my hits vs who I am fighting. Other people do NOT do that- and most do not like to have to gauge their hits.
I do not want to see a 14 year old female of 110 lbs get shieldbashed by Nanga. It won't be pretty! Or have said youg lady be hit by a hard "red" hit from Diego.

I am not a big guy- BUT if going "RAG" mode- I am sure almost anyone in Khazad-d?m would not enjoy it. So- in your realm- do as you please. The wait till 16 for National events. That is the way it is right now and it does not look like it is gonna change anytime soon.

In faith,
Sir Satanaka

This is why I dont think I'm ready for the events. Sure I'll go and watch and support Khazad Dum but I'm not ready for an event and I dont want to go to one and fight until im 'up to par' w/ belegarth standards. Hope that makes since. :target:

I too pull hits for the younger fighters, and swing harder for the vets.
I mean I am a little fella too :D and I don't want no big ol bruiser
beaten me up. I think that the age goin up may not be a bad idea.
But also I believe that what ever works for your particular realm is ok.

i don't think that age should be the deciding factor. mabye going by height or weight would be the way to go. I am a 6'3" high school senior, and our relm lets kids in elementary and middle school fight. they are less than half my size. i find it very awkard fighting some of these kids, since i can't go all out for saftey reasons. some of these kids need 2 hands to fight with a 1 handed weapon. one strong hit from a person like me could take one of their heads off. thats not safe, and makes it hard for me to have a good time at a fight. Perhaps we should have different fights based on size or age... where people of the same size fight people of the same size. that way everyone has fun, is safe, and can actually fight without being afraid of killing some little kid.

A lot of the kids that play with us are pretty small. Yet when I fight them I usually take it easy and slow with them. It's usually easy to kill them and make your way on to the older better fighters anyway. Most of the kids usually end up running away from me and fighting with each other more often.

I think that as long as fighters follow the safety rules and moderate them according to the opponent, everything should be fine...that said the minimum age should stay at 14-16 for national events, where as if they fighter can handle it I don't mind letting a 12 or 13 play at my fighter practices...in fact we even have practices for younger kids. It's always good to help set up the next generation of belegarth now and not have to look for it later! :D

I do agree with Elwrath. Letting the next gen. train with us is good but only letting the older kids in the majors is a good idea. Not completely shutting out the youngers does help with getting the word out also.

Calern--my guess would be bordom

This thread was already dead when I began to look at the webboard, so I'd never noticed it until today. I do have a comment, though, directed at the argument of judging who gets to fight on the basis of height/weight. I'm 18, but stand 5'4", and am under 120 pounds. The younger of my two brothers is 13, taller and weighs more than i, so who gets to fight? Age really is fair.

Now that I've vented that, watch me get slaughtered next practice ;)

I believe that the age requirements are thought out and fair, and that is not because that i am 16 years old. As other people were saying most people under 16 are not ready to fight at big events. But I also think that some of them are more ready than some people that have been doing this for a month and they are 20. (does that make sense?). I know that i have had many injuries from this sport and a lot of wimps (younger than 16) cannot handle the pain. I have cracked and bruised 2 different ribs and it hurts, but i still fight. I say, Leave the age restrictions as they are.

You know, we could just put it this way:

The age limit is there so that all the aspiring young fighters are ready to train their little hearts out and give the vets a run for their money when they are old enough!
