Postby Victor Slade » Fri Mar 12, 2010 7:18 pm

simple question, can a nerf (or some other foam ball producing company) ball be used as a flail head?

As long as it is squishy enough to pass weapons check, and the head has to have a diameter of at least 15 inches.

I don't think a nerf ball would be large enough to cover minimum measurements, Flail rules-BoW 1.4.5)

if you can find one big enough, that doesn't hit like a truck, try it. if it doesn't work... well, it doesn't work.

If you get a poof football, you should be fine if you cut all of the plastic coating off and put a layer of lower density open cell around it. But, once again, if it hits too hard you'll have to make adjustments.

1.4.5.1. The striking surface must haves a minimum circumference of fifteen (15) inches measured on separate axes.

C= PI*D
15=PI*D
~4.77464829=D

That means, minimally, its a sphere that's 4.77 inches across in any direction.

That's not big at all.

This one from Sports Authority might be good if you cut off the plasti-dip-like skin on it.

I remember when I was in grade school, my gym teacher used to have 8 inch dodge balls that were made of a material just like uncovered couch cushion foam. Totally soft and safe - perfect for Bel. I just can't find them online.

Yes, that's what I meant. I fought for three hours today and my mind was all looped out on adrenaline.

so what if the flail head passes the minimum required size on 3 axis.. but it could fail on 2... if you look at the top of the flail head its a +

The rule only states that it must have a circumference of at least 15 inches measured on separate axes. It does not specify how many (other than more than one), so technically if height and breadth passed, so does the flail head. Now, a weapons checker may still not pass it if depth-wise it was as thin as a sheet of paper because basically you're swinging a cutting edge around.

I would make sure that your X, Y, and Z axes meet minimum requirements. If you were going to shape the foam to give it ribs for design styling, remember that they have to be safe and your cover is probably going to eliminate most intricate design anyway - unless you were to sew the cover into the foam. Not something I'd waste time doing.

All Open Cell heads are too light. People will blow off your shots. Make a super basic flail head by rolling bluefoam into a 5" wide cylinder ~5" tall.

Or get funnoodle and wrap in two layers of blue foam.

That's about the only usefulness (aside from spear hafts) in Belegarth.

those deffinately would work, whats awesome is because u should probly get the outer layer of plastic stuff off,(because if u look at the top of those theres a hole to let out air and they hit kinda hard) if you squeeze them, OR soak in water the glue stuff holding it to the foam will unstick and u can take them out But, its the same as a poof ball really other wise. So probly still too light to unless you do some sort of all blue foam corein the middle of them u could probly make it work though

From the website: "Our most popular playground ball, constructed of durable 2-ply pebble-textured rubber with a butyl rubber bladder. " Emphasis mine.

That bladder makes me think that they're a typical rubber, air-filled kickball, which es no bueno. However, the paragraph near the bottom states that they have rubber and foam balls of all different types. These are the ones I was talking about! :)

We actually use to take Nerf Footballs and cut the tips off- until we had the right measurments- they worked great for a bag flail.

Talk to one of the older guys in Numenor about a good rope flail or Edhellen Armory.
