Foil & Hammer

Postby RedBeard » Sun Aug 06, 2006 7:01 pm

The foil is actually a little short for me. I might try making a saber. However, with a different style of fighting (think SCA light fighting), it is actually quite affective as a double green against armor as well when thrust with two hands upon the hilt. The trick, is getting the chance to do so.

It will take a little practice, but is more affective than I expected (I expected it to be almost useless) especially when coupled with a quick blue in my left.

It was my first time fighting with it today, and I never though "dang it, this thing just stinks!" (edited for family friendliness)

The Hammer hits hard, but finally passed today after some tree beating to loosen up the blue foam. I like someone's suggestion of some more courtesy padding on the haft, I may do that before giving it to Mansquatch.

If this weapons has a weak point structurally, it will be the hammer head stem... I will have to keep whacking it hard to try to fail it, but for now it is staying secure.

That Warhammer is probably the most versatile weapon I've ever seen. You probably can't tell by looking at it but once you hold it you can just feel the amount of options and angles you could use while fighting. I really hope you get that foam broken in so i can see it used on the field.

Its 31 inches from pommel to the tip of the blade. It has an okay stabbing tip too. Edges aren't aligned well but oh well.

How long is the warhammer?

right at 35 - 1/2".

I fought against it on Tuesday with Mansquatch and it does a good job of defense as well as being extremely versatile.

While I never had the opportunity to call "light" on it, it was fun as heck to fight against.

I am making some modifications to it, however. The grip is just cloth tape, it starts to slip after about 15 minutes of good sweating. I am going to rope it and add a small dowel on the front to give him a directional grip.

I never contacted the haft during battle, and I'm not sure I would while fighting him florentine, but I liked the idea of extra padding, so I'm going to put an extra blue foam layer around it (especially for shields) at the same time I regrip the handle.

USUALLY what we refer to daggers are the little stabby only things, basically any length as long as theres enough to be a handle and pommel plus the tip. what yours is sounds like a stabby shortsword .... yeah im picky...

Here's my *: 2 heavy blue swords, mace, flail, hammer, javelin, buckler, and 6 stabby daggers.
They are all PVC so they're a bit heavy, but still popular on the field.
The buckler is made from an old lunch tray.

My weapons are all named after cards from the Munchkin card game
(eg. The Hammer of Kneecapping, The Buckler of Swashing, and the Eleven Foot Pole).

Dagganoth-
It's 1/2 inch PVC. It looks larger because I wrap the handles with pipe insulation. A lot of people seem to think that is silly, but I like the extra padding and I've never had problems with my grip.

Ogre-
Thank you, It's a hammer. I started to make an axe, but as I built it, I thought the blade was too thin so I ended up making it wider and wider until it looked more like a hammer. You can't really tell from this angle. Still, I'm happy with how it came out. The slight hooks on the bottom are great for grabbing shields or disarming people.

yes exactly. I developed the tennis ball method of counterweighting in my old boffer sport where weapons tended to be heavier. The easiest counterweight i could muster was pennies, and i couldnt get enough inside the pipe to sufficiently balance it. This sword was quite larger so it required multiple tennis balls secured in a triangle shape.

A solid hit from this one took Killian from dunharrow straight to the ground when he blocked it with his shield.

No single blue could ever block or parry a full on swing from this one. Many a graceful fighter's blood stained the blade of this savage **** sword of doom.

i'm going to octoberfest i think. I have done some cool stuff with that sword, but i wouldn't say i'm anything amazing, far from it. I've only been doing this for a couple months. Also, this weapons reign of terror ended recently when it exploded at the hilt. I plan on restoring it's glory soon.

yeah i have a dilemna about that too. the problem was that the connectors i used on the pvc prevented me from having a single continuous core piece to run from pommel to tip. i had to have two seperate pieces for the blade and handle joined at the cross-guard which meant eventually it would die. Does anybody now of a t connector for pvc that allows a single pipe to run through the middle but still allow perpandicular pieces off the sides. I would imagine not, because water would not be able to flow through the pipe that way, defeating the purpose of the connector (for it's intended use at least).

I've also been trying to figure that one out. I've been looking at the connector pieces I have and I believe that if you can, using a file, scrape out the inside lip of the connector then you *should* be able to slide the pvc all the way through. Now I haven't tried it yet so I'm not sure it will work, but there's an idea at least for you to try. Let me know how it turns out, and good luck because I really want to see that sword!!!

You could buy a large (as in long, maybe a 4" by 4" "x" type deal) and cut off two ends with the lips. Then, slide the blade core through and seal that good. After the glue sets you can glue the seperate cross hilt pieces in.

Hope that makes sense*

Salochstagh,

Have you tried inserting a smaller core through the connector.
Build it just like you have been but put a short wooden dowel or smaller diameter PVC pipe inside.
It will work best if the insert just fits into the pipe and you glue it in place firmly.

I'm not suggesting an inner core through the entire blade (that would be too heavy) just add a core to the weak spot.

If you have or know anybody who has a dremel tool you could use the rotary sander bit to grind out the lip of the connector. Or you could use a wood rasp. (It's a really rough file you can find at any hardware store.)

IT is actually very simple all you need to do is get the connetor you need and get a pair of pliers put the as little of the connector in the pliers as possible and put the piec over a stove or a heat gun then slide the connector on and let it cool it will harden it but if anything did fail it would be the connecting pieces not the core....simple

The easiest counterweight i could muster was pennies, and i couldnt get enough inside the pipe to sufficiently balance it. This sword was quite larger so it required multiple tennis balls secured in a triangle shape.

Last time I checked you get smoked at realm practices. A lot.
