Shield Covers

Postby Teej » Wed May 03, 2006 8:12 am

Well I got until 2am to get this crap done, until I have pack them and get my boys to TN. Besides drawstrings, what are other ways to lock a shield cover down, good.

Was thinking staples myself. But was questioning legality. Core is plywood I believe I made the swords my buddy made the shields, I know they're wood but he said it's man made and very durible...

For wooden shields, furnature tacks work pretty good and they look neat. Staples work fine too.

These create a cover that won't spin which is cool if you have a symbol and a round shield. On the otherhand it is much harder to take off your cover for foam repairs to your edging.

Drawstrings and elastic are pretty easy as well. You just use Bias Tape (sold at any cloth store) and sew it around the edge of your cloth cover along both edges of the bias tape, then run elastic or a draw string through the channel that the bias tape makes and voila a simple quick removable shield cover. (bias tape is not adhesive tape, it is just pre cut strips of cloth for finishing out clothing)

On a round shield these will spin during combat slowly, you will see people who have these with thier company symbol on thier shield upside down cause it spun gradually in combat. These are easy to remove for foam repairs. You can keep it from spinning by tying the drawstring to the back of your shield or tacking it down one or 2 spots with a strip of cloth sewn on the back edge of the cover that is tied or tacked to the back of the shield.

There's a guide on the wiki for making drawstring shield covers as well.

If you do make a drawstring cover, I'd strongly recommend you lay out your rope in the tube you're making for it as you're sewing - that way when you're done it's already "threaded" - otherwise it's sometimes a pain to get it in there :).

Staples are fine, just make sure they're completely in the wood, not at the wood/foam seam. They make a nice tight cover that can go around odd shapes, but it makes the cover a pain to take off and you need a staplegun (or tape) to put it back on again. Tape is uglier on the backside (usually), but works as well and is easier to remove and replace than staples. Personally, I like drawstrings the most when it's an option.
