Normal sword

Postby varadin » Mon Oct 20, 2003 8:03 am

I myself believe that to many people, manly noobs have this mentality that the normal straight no special sword is an ineffective weapon. Let me clarify this right now. i dont want this forum to be a bash noobs or bash flails or something. i was just wondering if any one else agreed with me.

I see it a lot on the forums, and I know I had a tendancy to try to invent the "magic weapon" that would beat swords, but honestly, I've started using single blues a lot more now.

Tir Asleen recently had a television appearance, wherein it was claimed that there was a variety of weapons. However, everyone present was using a fairly typical sword and board combination (and one club, which in the current rules is considered a sword). The majority of locals are using sword and board, or double sword (shields have been put off until now), so I can't call them underrated here.

blue swords are not underratted, infact our whole realm uses blue swords. Most of us do not like flails for the reason that it is "skill on a stick" and requires no ablity to use it (no offense to people that use it) but noobs like it and we beleive that it is a noob weapon... flouritine and sword and board our now the most popular styles.

I'm just not into using swords as much as I am to using weapons like huge maces, spears, axes, and the like. I'm more partial to the uncommon weapons.

i think the people who experiment with different weapons have it better. They find a weapon they are comfortable with, not having to only choose from a sword or flail. I'm not knocking flails, but a more over-all experiance with swords i think would turn most people into better fighters, like i know some realms have a no flail until a year rule, i like that one.

I've found that flails are generally great for fighting other shields, but are very limited in their diversity of technique when going up against other styles. For sheer diversity alone, I prefer a sword. I'd always choose a sword in a single-blue fight instead of a flail, because in my opinion you can simply do more things with a sword than with a flail because of the way they are wielded. And when going up against shields, learning to do wrapshots and pulls and drop-shots to get around and inside your opponent's shield increases your skill MUCH more than relying on a flail to do all the work for you. On that note, out of all the blue weapons, I actually prefer a nice 3' speed-club with about a 1'-1.5' striking surface. Doing wrapshots around a shield, and dropshots inside a shield, are made MUCH easier when you can strike with a cylindrical weapon, whereas normally you'd have to twist your wrist more to avoid striking with the flat of a sword blade.

So give me a good fast club any day over either a sword or a flail. I almost always train with a sword or a club against shields, but if I'm going up against a bunch of shieldwalls in a battle (like say, Rome), then I'll usually reach for the flail simply because it's easier to get kills that way.

I love my little blue hammer. The Hammer of Jesus, as dubbed by Skittles. I have no idea why, but it is perhaps my favorite weapon of all time. Nice and short, forces me to close with opponents... I'll have to get some dimensions to you, as it is quite a bit shorter than most one handed swords...

I experimented witha few massive weapons a spear ax, double spear and I've found that iam most effective with a short sword and sheild rather then going it barbarian (no armor two hander sword) though i did learn to dodge arrows like that.

Single blues are in some ways underrated. A fighter on the field with that has truly mastered the sword shield combination is "the" force to be reckned with. For my example I use Sir Treethump.

Also, using blues to start off with makes for excellent training. I have recently picked up a flail, to assist, in my learning new sword techniques.

for flourintine i suggest 2 longer swords that are single sidded. With sword and board, it is all about the 1.5' sword that is light and fast. I prefer a sword over anything, anyday.

im with the swords, although i still havent found a perfect match for me. i find shields to be kind of strange, i got in an argument on the einhair board because i stated that shields offer to much protection, and i refuse to use the flails on them untill i can get my swords around them (yes swords was plural) i even went through shield training for a while, ill trade in the shield for another blade any day. :sword: :sword:

It does not matter if you use a sword, a flail or just a stick. It is a weapon. They all achieve the same end. If you are of mind to simply win, it does not not matter. If you are preoccupied with a shape, or a matter of an inch, you have already lost.

Using the term "skill on a stick" and "talent on a stick" makes you sound very ignorant. You just sound like you suck with what you use and just blame the flail for your inadequicies (sp?).

But yeah, The sword isn't that underrated, but alot of people are very willing to give up the sword for a flail. I fight both styles so it really doesn't matter to me. Look at alot of the vets (the good ones), they kick * with a short sword and board.

the only weapons i've made are 36 inch blues, just barely blues. and i made a couple 26 inch short swords. i have a 4 foot piece of PVC that will someday be a two hander or a hand and a half or something like that. i really have no interest in making an axe, flail, ect, though i'm thinking maybe a spear would be cool.

That's the lesson to be had here folks. This thread spans three calendar years. it's 16 months old, with an 11.8 month gap between two specific posts. That's entirely too much.

Right at the top of every post is the date and time it was made. Take half a second to look at that. If the most recent post is more than 30 days in the past, think very hard whether it is a good thing to resurrect a dead thread. Most often that answer is no.

Holy cow, I didn't even pay attention to the fact that this thing is two years old.

Anyway to my vote.
It depends on the person

Swords are not given the credit they deserve.
As my example, I use Sir Ivan of EBF. Never in my life have I seen a man(please don't take this offensively) of his size utterly decimate an opponent so thoroughly with a single, barely over three feet long, curved blue sword.
I barely registered him moving in Regg's trial at beltaine '03, I just heard the repeated sounds of impact and realized Sir Ivan was ten feet from where he started. No offence to Reggs, but I'm sure he can attest to how blindingly fast Ivan Is.

Given that Flails against shields, are a lot easier to win with. The extra hinge allows for the impact to go past a shield, where a sword would be completely stopped.
But in the right hands, a blue sword is the ultimate weapon.
We rode on the winds of the rising storm, We ran to the sounds of the thunder. We danced among the lightning bolts, and tore the world asunder.

The only blue swords that I believe are over-rated are those "ultralights" that many people who are my size (5'11" or shorter, small build, 150 pounds or less) seem to enjoy using. You can make a flurry of attacks with them, but they seem to attract the "rhino-hiding" and "tap-fighting" issues far too much. I also had a horrible problem of getting hit while trying to use them because they have no reach. Personally, I don't like them and have no use for them.

Normal blue swords are good though. They are among the easiest weapons to make and aren't really that hard to use. They can also strike fast and still strike hard enough to register a hit. You can also stab (or backstab) effectively with them as well, which I find especially useful. Overall, the normal blue sword is an effective and versitle weapon and is especially effective when florentined or used with a shield.

:sword: Got swords?

I just think it's funny that Varadin thought that he could just decide to declare the thread closed.
