my red, with a pic.

Postby Victor Slade » Fri Jun 05, 2009 9:10 pm

This is a red im working on, its huge. its currently about 5' 4" tall, its got a stabbing tip(not sure itll pass as one), a hand guard 14" across, the blades 6" thick, and it weighs a large amout, i have no scale to measure it on. Im not done yet, I need a cover, to finish the pommel, and i have rope to wrap the handle with.

heres a pic

Image

is it legal?

Add the cover, finish the pommel, and you should be good to go.

PVC and Red do not usually go well together, in my experience.

yeah, but its really the only core material i can afford right now, the nearest store that sells fiberglass rods is fairly far away. I normally wouldnt care but my car sucks and gets about 15MPG so as i mentioned earlier, its the only core i can get that doesnt rape my wallet.

Both the weapons that I have made that have passed and those that have failed inspection look good in photos. You may have to reinforce the pvc to keep it from failing for flex, but I won't be able to tell from a picture.

How did you construct the crossguard? And please say that's 80 schedule PVC. If it's 40 schedule... well... enjoy your 20 minutes of combat.

pvc/foam, ill make a pic on paint and post it in a bit, its hard to explain. and it is 40 schedule pvc. It doesnt flex that much suprisingly. it is however rediculouly top heavy. Its not a great weapon but i cant really say it sucks either. and i do still have to finish it.

Is it a single box and 4 blade layers? What kind of foam is the stabby? What size is the PVC? Is that pommel just one wrap and cap?

yes, single box 4 layers, open cell foam stabby, 3/4" schedule 40 pvc, and the pommel isnt finished, but i plan on about 3 layers.

Reds that long should be double boxed, what kind of open cell, if its just computer foam; its going to fold over in a couple of stabs and tear off. 3/4 sch 40 is going to break.

In addition to providing a wider, more stable surface for the blade foam layers, a double box may also allow you to use a layer or two less.

My first attempt at a red sword involved a double box on two inexpertly gorilla-glued together 3/8" fiberglass fence posts. The cores were moving around and sawing at the foam after a single practice.

Image

I re-did the sword on an 11/16" fiberglass core and that weapon is still usable. I've only had to repair a blown-out thrusting tip on it once.

Image

I like pushing to see what I can accomplish with weapon construction. To this day, I still make any new weapons in sets of 2 or 3 and the latter ones always look better than the first one. I don't consider any of my experiments failures whether or not the weapon failed because I have learned something from each one.

They break easily too. My friend had one with the dragon pommel, and when it snapped, he got a small 2" shard in his arm. Be careful!

LMAO

What a cheap-ass sword.

I also have to laugh at the fact that stabbing a TV set is stupid and insane. Though if you insist on being a jackass and pulling dangerous sword-cutting stunts, use this instead. You should have better luck. Well, at least you won't have a loose and/or broken blade flipping back in your face. Just try not to cut yourself with it.

yes, im quite aware that they arent battle ready, and that dragon one must be bad luck, cuz i cut a pumkin in half last october and it went through the pumkin hit the wooden table and the blade snapped in half. i still keep it it the sheath so that it looks cool but no one knows its broken :P

and yes black cat, they are cheap as ****. i got that dragon one for $15. the most expensive one up there was $30. and i do in fact know there not battle ready. Whick is why i stick to cutting fruit and veggies.

You shouldn't even be swinging those around. The rat-tail tangs can snap just from that. They are wall hangers, leave them on the wall. Its very easy to get a usable sword for very cheap. http://sbgswordforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?

as i said, that one was very cheap. the rest are $25 and they work just fine on veggies. I got the others from BUDK which sells great swords, i bought that dragon one from a booth at a fair. I was aware of it **** ness. I should have taken more precautions but i honestly didnt expect it to make it through the pumpkin.

Yeah... You're not getting me. Those swords should not be swung. Bud K sells the same crap that every other website like that sells. $25 is not what you pay for a battle ready sword. Take off the pommels and handles and you'll see the tiny little piece of steel welded onto that stainless steel blade just waiting to snap off and plunge into your eye. Anyways, stainless sucks balls for anything over 12".

I understand this, however, I have been unclear, im aware those are **** swords. And i dont use them, those are wallhangers. Except for that black and red katana, but i only swing at the air and an occational apple, and it has been that way for the 5 years ive had it, it still perfectly fine. I understand they are not to be swung at anythjing, but they dont snap under there own weight when being swung either. I do have other battle ready swords not pictured. Ive got a black fantasy sword (its one piece with rope wrapped around the handle, its looks to pretty to be functional but there isnt really anything that could brake of it.) and a scottish claymore that ive had for 4 years and has taken the lifes of many pumkins and watermelons.

Especially when broiled with the right amount of brown sugar... mm!~

Hell, I don't really even trust full tangs anymore. I remember a few years back filming a film for HS using one of those dime-a-dozen straight, black-coated, single edge, "ninja swords." The ones that are about two feet long and are usually sold in those cheap * black canvas scabbards (anyone know what I'm talking about?). But yeah- We were getting some action shots, which required me to strike at a fallen tree with the full tang "weapon". Camera guy says go, i swing, and on the second swing, the blade makes a beautiful bell-like report, and I am left holding half a blade. Funny in retrospect, but * glad no one got needlessly hurt.

PS- found it!

because i'm very passionate about kids swinging around wall hanger swords marketed as battle ready and hurting themselves. And the discussion about the sword had ended.

Doesn't EVERY thread on this board that gets over 20 posts go totally off topic? The first thread is just where things started, but has little to do where they will end.

And cutting things with cheap swords can get you or the people watching maimed for life. If you are going to cut stuff, know what you are cutting and do it with things made to cut that. Swords should never, ever be used to chop full-grown trees. :shudder:

Hey! I'll have you know that it was made from the highest quality 440 stainless steel that China has ever produced for 5$

Because, you know, its the internet.
Victor Slade wrote:I agree, this got very off topic.

Really? How much more do you want to hear about your red sword? I was under the impression that the idea (that it was essentially destined to be broken at its first two handed swing) was conveyed to a degree that further commentary of any sort would be redundant.
You should really expend your talents on something with a fiberglass or bandshop pole spine!

Wow, I genuinely thought it was just somebody's 13-15 year old brother who didn't know any better, given the avatar and context-sensitive fields of realm, fighting style etc.

Bots have gotten quite a bit better I guess.
