Buying a bow online

Postby Xavier » Sun Jul 11, 2010 1:00 pm

Forgive me as I know I will sound newbish but I haven't really ventured into archery since I started fighting

Currently looking for a bow online. Wondering what's crap and what's good. I've found a few good ones on Ebay. (That look and sound good anyways)

Any advice anyone could give me?

First, this is not a rules question. This thread should be moved elsewhere so you will get more answers. Second, As long as you get a bow that draws 35 pounds at 28 inches, you should be fine. Some people like the takedown recurve bows because they are easier to transport, but i think you get more power from a standard recurve. compound bows are illegal.

Try this bow out. I haven't used one myself but have heard from several people that it works wonderfully and fits the draw weight requirements.

It does look great but I was looking for something that wasn't fiberglass. I've heard if a bow draws more than 28 inches a stopper can be applied to it. Not sure if that's true or not or what they look like even.

Most bows could/can draw more than 28". The arrows themselves are fitted with a draw stop (a wrapping of tape at the 28" mark so the arrow cannot be drawn more than 28"). You want to find a bow that has a 35# draw * 28". This is usually printed on the bow somewhere near th grip.

I also use a PSE Razorback and I love it, but I have to watch where I set the brace at. if I crank the bolts (hand-tight) down as hard as I can I reliably shoot ~40# at 28".

I love my bow. It's on the expensive end of the bows as far as things go, but it's shorter than many that I've seen and it lets me be in the thick of the action without the ends of the bow hitting things. It's rather reliable shooting at 35# * 28" but if you twist the string too much it will jump the bow's strength past that 35# mark. That's probably the same for most bows though...

PS - the price has gone up considerably since I bought mine back in 02...

Well, I'm new here (been a member for a while but haven't posted squat) but I figured I'd peruse some old topics and see what was up and thought I might be able to help on this. I don't know what kind of bow you're looking for but if you want something a bit more period (like I was looking for) a longbow might be to your liking. I spent a lot of time looking for something I could afford and would still be reliable. Most starter longbows are over $120 and I couldn't afford it and then luck hit me. I found an English longbow made of hickory (a selfbow, meaning no laminates) for $62 including shipping on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWNX:IT

It's unfinished but it has some sort of mild wax on it which comes right off with relative ease and can then be finished in whatever color or paint you wish. It pulls a little above 35# when first strung but after a few pulls it drops right down to the 35# specified. They offer them in various lengths, strengths etc. I haven't been disappointed in it yet....though I haven't had it for a long time, but for the price you can't go wrong.

Hope that helps!
