Lol Kraesh I didn't read Fitz's post where he said the Samurai Ork would be wielding the weapon in the pic. I did see the pic though. I'd like to wield this and see exactly how you would be striking with that bottom end. I imagine it as if you were working it like a spear, and then brought the spear head up to push the pommel toward them to strike.

I dunno how much power you could generate that way, but if you swung that small end like a glaive I don't know how effective it would be either. One of the girl's at Fool's Raid made a quarterstaff just like that.

It seems to be most effective as a spear, using the back end as your sidearm.
I can drop you witht the back end. IIfI hit your torso.
Its weird. There is a cool highside side sweep around to the sword side leg that involves blocking midway. Its working but might turn into an elbow breaker.

Arrakis, this question is specifically for you.

So, today I should be able to finally go out and get a Golds (I believe that's what it's called) yoga mat and finally make a stabbing tip. But I'm not sure how to do it. I'm not a huge fan of the double ended weapon vesion (duct tape is suggested), so I was wondering if I should try for a modified version of your stabbing tip design.

You don't understand why people on the internet are suspicious of a weapon that looks nothing like any passing weapon we've ever seen?

Sludge, first of all, there is no uproar. Everyone seems pretty cool about this weapon.
Second, it IS. An experimental new thing. I've already said that if there is a problem at events I'm gonna change it.
Arrakis, do you really think it looksNOTHING like any other weapon? C'mon dude.
It looks exactly like what it is, a 2 ended bel weapon.
I don't know why Fitz made the ends so god aweful huge. They hit beautifully and are really strong, but I think its over kill.
I think I might slim it down some. While it wont make it safer, it will make people feel like it looks more normal.

*shrug* The tips are a totally different diameter from the haft and I've never seen something like that where the haft was strike legal.

I've seen several crappy clubs refitted with stab tips like this, but it IS kind differnt.
I don't see why 1/4" of eva wont do the job. It would also make it look alot more "stick-like".
which is what it is, a long sharp stick.

Alright, so here's the results of my experiment, the slimmed down quarter staff.
Image
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/215757_10150162187561793_555586792_7070067_3287811_n.jpg

Sorry for the poor quality, I had to take them from my phone.

but the end result was a 3" diameter blade that was 23" long. The overall length was about 6'.

Vador, the red ends were actually just a coincidence as red fabric was on sale for a buck a yard.

I've done some basic testing and it's held up well. Today is a practice, so I'll get a chance to give it a try with a lot of people, and fight against an edhellen quarterstaff as well.

Thanks for all your help guys.

And forkbeard, may the bubbly hatred of your weapon strike fear into every foe.

I know I would be scared.

So it got in some good field testing today, and was pretty fun. I managed to kill people that weren't Slagar about half the time while using it, and it was just lolsy fun. If it would be appropriate (I don't know editing etiquette concerning this) I would like to add my design to the Construction wiki. Thanks again for all your help guys.

Glad you're enjoying it.

Hop on geddon and add your tut. You don't need anyone's permission, but there are rules and standards just like any Wiki. Make sure you use the sand box until you're good to go with your final edition, and ask Galya for any tips and pointers on editing / making her job easier reviewing your post.

Well, it failed already.
The foam(octogon cut crosslink, just like the warlord sports speed bats) came completely unglued from the core. The bulbous ends can twist freely.
Im only telling you guy this because I'm rebuilding it and it'll be a proper bel weapon with low profile ends next week.

Version 2.0 is already in the works.
I glued all new blade foam on and am rebuilding the tips.
It is lighter already, however.
This would never be. Decent red core.

My 1/4" eva with the sticky-rubbery flim on one side came today! Woohoo!
The 3/4 staff is rebuilt.
I ended the striking surface flush with the core. I then glued a disc of split 6oz leather over the core. Then I glued a 1/2" disc of 4lb eva on, then a 3/4" disc of 2lb eva, then a 1 1 1/2" disc of softer sort-of-opencell stuff.
Then I put three strips of fiberglass tape over the tip and wrapped it in the 1/4" eva.
It is now 3" overall at the tips and 2 1/2" on the rest.
It weighs less, im looking forward to seeing what it wieghs.
We'll see how long version 2.0 lasts.
Pics when I transfer them fron FB.

The weapon was well received at Taw Brawl. Not one had any problem with any of its construction, although everyone wanted to know why it was sooooo light.
The 3" stab tips worked great and held up fine.
I still don't like how Bo handles, but I think that is in my head.

awesome.

Was it an effective weapon? Is the super light core paramount to making this weapon usable at all? Would bandshoppe be advisable or would it hit too hard?

It only works at 3" wide because of the light core.
You would need some crazy secret faom I've never seen to make it 3" on a bandpole.

Since he never posted it, here's a vid which includes Dyn and the quarterstaff (only one in the vid, to make this easy). To head off at least part of the slew of outrage: this isn't the local Bel realm, this is a 'boffer room' at a local Anime convention. I was not in attendance.
