Bows, any tips?

Postby beekmaster » Sun Jan 11, 2004 11:14 am

In the musket thread (may it rest in peace) a huge number of people mentioned how bows are awesome

I might not end up using a bow, but someone else in my group may. So i was wondering if people have tips on where to get bows and make arrows

how much do they cost. any tips on bow use. what type of foam to padd the arrows with...

I would recommend getting arrow-making kits from http://www.edhellen.com for making arrows for the first time... Safety is the number 1 concern when making arrows because its easily one of the most dangerous aspects of this sport.

First off, bows aren't necesarily cheap. A really good bow can run you up to 250$, but you can get cheap 15 lb at bi-mart for like 20. So somewhere in between there is the cost for your bow. If you're going to make your own arrows, I highly reccomend ordering 12 arrow kits from http://www.edhellen.com/materials.html , and making them from there. They give good instructions, and you won't have to cut out so many * rings yourself. Those are 2$ each, so 24$ for the 12 (plus shipping). (for every 12 you order, you get a nice hefty roll of super cool hockeytape, too.) Shafts are tricky. If you have an archery shop in town, go there and ask them for help. You want nice, light shafts, that don't shatter. Shattering is bad. If they're any good, they'll direct you to the right shafts. All in all, it's not cheap, if you want it done well. I reccommend just a mid-line bow, but don't get too high of a poundage.. I think 25 is our limit here, and 15 for crossbows. Hope this helps. :)

Edit:
Stupid bish for posting WHILE I was typing this up.... *slap*

I really dont know what I'm talking about because I don't have a bow, but this is what I have to say. From what I've seen, bows are a HUGE investment. lloki already pointed out how much $ you could spend, but even after spending the $ you got to spend time training with it and getting good. Getting good with a bow takes a lot longer than most weapons. If you are willing to invest the time and money, then by all means, go for it.

We have 2 bows in our realm, both 35lb ones, one was bought off ebay for $70

I think archery is fun in this sport and as a hobby, if you take the time to practice i don't think you'll find it terribly hard to kill somone, but there is definatly a range of skill out there, i cna kill somone with an arrow, but i am no where near as good as gey or xooyan.

hope that helped

Yes the draw stop has be be 28 inches, and that's probably what they're talking about. You don't really have to worry about that on the bow because any arrows who's shaft is longer than 28" has to have a stop on it at the 28" mark so you can't draw more than that anyway.

As for bows, as Elerosse mentioned, we got one off of E-Bay and the other we have was one that a fighter just had laying around.

For arrows, the ones in our realm we ordered off of Cabela's, they are the Maverick Carbon arrows. You can get them here. They aren't very cheap but then again archery can be one of the most expensive styles to take up but it can pay off. The shafts are reasonably priced and are pretty tough.

Alright, you can buy a bow on e-bay. Try to find a recurve or a longbow with a 30 lb. draw at 28 inches. If you buy a 35 pounder it might not always pull just right and if it pulls heavier it fails.

What you've been told about the edhellen arrow kits is all true, they are the safest and most efficient way to build arrows I know of.
They take a little effort if you've never made one that way before, but are worth the effort required to master them.

The best arrow shafts for foam combat can be found at www.cabelas.com Do a search for carbon arrows and you will get a couple of pages of different shafts, but you are looking for maverick carbon shafts. You want the 240 size and the 30" length. They cost $39.99 before shipping.

in my area we have two bows i use one and leaf uses one. i sugest getting a bow at a weight of about 33 lbs that way temprature affection wont let it fail. But as for foam we either use edhellen or your favorite... NOODLE FOAM. we have roughly six arrows all made this way and they have passed the test at practice and at spring wars in the highlands of chaos. for more info on making them though you will have to get in touch with leaf here is his email ----> blkdrgn100@msn.com.

You will be much better off if you get a good recurve. mine was $80, and it's served me well. Don't go cheap when getting a bow. If you get a crappy fiberglass one you will just embarass yourself when you are trying to shoot on the field.

If you're looking for a longbow, head over to http://www.taylorbows.com. The longbows are suprisingly cheap, and aren't "cheap" in the quality sense.
