Stabbing Tip Foam

Postby Grey Mu Gamma » Thu Jun 02, 2011 8:36 pm

I have a Danskin Now yoga mat, and I was wondering if it would work for stabbing tip foam. Here's it's thing on Walmart's site:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Danskin-Now-Yoga-Mat-Periwinkle/12321504

Could I use this as stabbing tip foam?
Thanks again for your help!

Uhhhhhhhh...... no.

I think what you're looking for is a little something like this:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Gold-s-Gym-Fi ... t/12321502
It'll be about 1/2 inch thick or so and be relatively sqishy. Use two layers if it packs a bit too much punch.

Hope that helps. Good luck, have fun, don't hurt yourself.

Rather than post a new topic, I thought it may be best to hijack this post with a similar question.

Would this work for a stabbing tip using the new construction method?

http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/store ... _153502_-1

We have this store near us, and these seem to be a pretty cheap option which is good for most of us, I just want to make sure they work.

Yes, that is pretty much the same as what I get from *'s and use for stabbing foam.

Thanks. The stuff is cheap as mess too. I love these boards, always getting quick replies and stoofs.

* OP:

Look at the thickness of that stuff you linked.......does that look safe in any number of layers?

I don't even know why that stuff is marketed as a yoga mat in the first place because it wouldn't even cushion my tiny * wife if she were lying on it. It is most suitable, however, for lining the shelves of your cabinets so that your glasses and dishes don't slide around.

Mint's and Lenus' suggestions are legit.

Southern Marches. Hot as mess here. More specifically, central Alabama.

Wow. Put a stabbing tip on one of my Blue only swords last night, then did the hit test with one of my friends. I really wailed into him, and the biggest surprise is that the "Medium" hit and the "HARD DOUBLE IMA KILLA THAT MUTHA*ER" felt almost the same, no pain, but just a nice, solid, I got Hit motion.

I like these a lot more than the squishy poof balls. Those are hard to tell when you get hit, so a lot of the time I'm calling "light" when it's actually a decent blow. I try to make up for it, but in the heat of battle, I often just don't feel those tips. These things basically scream at you that you've been stabbed. I'm going to make an 8' spear with this, what would be the suggested build method for doing that?

For obvious reasons, I like my own method on that page better than Poo's.

Perhaps I've missed this, but for haft padding, would pipe insulation work? seems like it would save you on a boatload of blue foam if you go with the taco wrap.

Just as a tip, you probably wanna check the date of the last post in any given thread you post in. It's not usually a good thing to bring back nearly two-year-old threads.

To answer your question, I'd personally had some of the higher quality pipe insulation last a while on my glaive (6 years* and going strong), but I wrapped it in duct tape (not tightly!) before adding cloth tape over top. By no means a very efficient way of doing things, but it's lasted a long time for me. If you're going to use pipe insulation, I'd recommend something like Armaflex (which feels a lot like yoga mat foam) as opposed to the really cheap fun noodle sort.

* I made the glaive 6 years ago, but it hasn't seen weekly fighting for that entire time. I'd say it's probably seen around 1-2 years worth of weekly practices in the time since I made it for various reasons.

Fair enough. I weighed bringing back an old thread vs. starting a new one on a topic already similar enough, where the conversation was heading in the direction of the content of my question. Perhaps next time I will simply start a new thread.

Thanks for the advice on the haft padding, my hope is to be building spears and javs by next month for our new unit.

Cheers,

To chime in on that, I'd say go blue foam. It lasts longer than pipe insulation, and works better for how it is intended in this situation, and that is as incidental padding. The idea behind incidental padding is not to make it as low profile as possible without weapons checkers complaining, but to ensure that we do not harm other fighters if the course of combat results in someone being struck with the non-striking portion of our weapon.

Blue foam may take longer, and be a bit of a pain in the * to apply on smaller diameter cores, but I feel that it does the job much better.

I suppose I should also note that the haft padding on my glaive doesn't often see much action (most of the people who use it are pretty good at hitting with the blade and nothing else), so I imagine that has a fair bit to do with it as well. I'd go with Thurat's suggestion of blue foam, ESPECIALLY for javelins, as those tend to see a lot of haft action. Or maybe that's just because in Dun Abhon, most of us can't throw javelins properly lol.

Never forget, quality time and quality materials will go a long way toward preserving your weapons for many battles to come.
