3M Adhesive Spray & Dap Contact Cement

Postby Pig » Thu Aug 11, 2011 1:48 pm

So I went over to home depot and bought this can of contact cement. 16 dollars! Can you believe that, for the 32 oz. can. But whatever, you know.

Before I opened the thing I realized that my dad has a ungodly supply of 3M adhesive spray in the cabinet. I'm talking wholesale, people. And I was wondering if that spray is okay to use in foam smithing. (I'm making a shield out of a camping mat and a cut-to-shape boogy board.)

Also, is there any other place to buy this DAP contact cement without it taking me down nearly twenty?

Alright, thanks.

3m spray 90 is nice, spray 77, meh, not so much, but that's just my opinion.

In the backwards world I'm from (Canada) DAP Weldwood isn't available. I've found 3M Spray 90 and 77 to both work quite well as a substitute, and the difference between the two has been indistinguishable for durability (maybe a different story in boiling hot weather).

Not only will it work, but you'll even be able to build significantly faster since the stuff doesn't have to sit for nearly as long before bonding.

I'm going to beg to differ on this. IME, Contact Cement, Dap or Barge, is much stronger than either 3M 77 or 90 and the 90 is a pain in the neck to work with. I'll use either of the spray glues for facing a shield and they'll work just fine, but for quality swords they will not stand up.

THE FINISHED PRODUCT:

Used the ungodly amount of 3M and I have to say it was pretty * frustrating to work with on the edges. This is most likely because I cut the main core out of a boogy board with a hacksaw blade (Tape as a handle) and it caused mostly uneven areas.

Or not. It was pretty * frustrating.

It worked -fantastically- for the shield face though.

I don't know how to sow (I have a sowing machine. Gonna do it later. )) So I just gorilla taped the fabric in a haphazard fashion to the back. Dude. Gorilla tape smells like shhhhhhhhhh*ttt.

The straw ribbon is what I had as scraps from the main piece of fabric, so I decided to add it as a little tassel so when I run through the field I look like.. I don't know. Cooler?

It also gave me the idea to tie the end onto the hilt of a weapon, so should I get disarmed I can pull it back.

The 8:30 is an excerpt from the Gospel of Luke, since my battle name is Legion.

And Jesus asked him, saying, "What is thy name?" And he said, "Legion": because many devils were entered into him.

Thanks for the tips. But god does Gorilla tape smell like crap, can someone please tell me how to get rid of this stank? The Bellydancers at my realm are going to flee in terror at the scent of my shield.

Ugh.

I was probably a bit unclear, I found there was no difference in strength between Spray 90 and Spray 77. I've got no doubt that DAP is better and that's why it's used where available.

I dont know about the 77 or 90 but the 3m foam fast 74 allperpose spray is wicked im makeing my first weapon today or tomarow and im useing it for the fact that i work on amtrack train cars and if u have ever been on one that long carpet in the center is pulled very tight with a kicker and only about 18 inches of each end are sprayed and 4 years later its still a pain in the **** to pull up and its foam backed carpet to a stainles plate now what seems to work the best is to spray bolth items then when it looks dry and is tacky and no longer seperates from the item then u put both items together and aply preshure wala but if u dont get it stuck right thr first time you are probly ****ed its not a forgiveing thing lol just my 2 cents takeit or leaveit
