How to make a quicktube pass template?

Postby Mughi » Tue Aug 30, 2011 3:31 pm

I must be missing something downright obvious. I can't figure out a way to make a ~3" wide quicktube pass template. Either the top is too rounded and pokes through .5", or too squared off and the edge passes through .5"

Am I simply checking the weapon wrong, or is there a very specific way to get these damned things the right shape?

Ergo, if your weapon is 3" across, and semicircular over the top, then it doesn't matter how much it passes through the template.

Some weapons checkers differ when it comes to testing corners, but I've been taught at several events that you only need to test the very end of the weapon to see if gravity will pull it through the template naturally. If it doesn't, then the corners pass. Since this is a quicktube why are there corners on yours?

Because for some reason, I thought that the semicircular rule applied only to flatblades. I didn't realize it was simultaneously a semispherical rule.

Interesting stuff, thanks for the clarification.

Because as just covered, If not round they are not exempt from template. If not exempt from template, they will never pass template at a 3" diameter.

Unless you've got something new to add, in which case I'm all ears.

I think what they're saying if it was flat at the top.. with a diameter of 3"... then there's no way it will pass through a 2.5 inch hole, ergo solving your problem. Since the book of war states, "1.3.3. Two and one-half inch rule-No surface on a striking edge (sword tip, arrow head, spear head, javelin head, etc.) whether designed for stabbing or not, may readily pass more than 0.5 inch through a 2.5 inch hole." 2.5"< 3", your sword shouldn't pass through it.

Really?!

Okay, so that goes right back to my original post where I asked if I'd been checking weapons wrong. Why is it worded the way it is in the BoW then? It specifically states that pommels "must not readily pass through a 2" diameter hole", which fully conforms with what you just said. "No surface on a striking edge (sword tip, arrow head, spear head, javelin head, etc.) whether
designed for stabbing or not, may pass more than 0.5 inch through a 2.5 inch hole" certainly seemed very clear to me though, and does not even slightly conform to what you just said.

I know that if anyone is an authority on this, it's you Bo. I don't want to let it sound as though I'm challenging your authority or anything. I'm just really confused right now as to why the rules are written the way they are if that stipulation of 1/2" through the template is meaningless.

a 3" wide sword will should not pass more than 1/2" if you have spherical tip the semi-circular rule applies. testing the edges of the tip, again the round shape of the club, will create semi-circular surfaces.

Well, I don't enjoy arguing, especially when I can't back my points up. I've finally gotten access to a camera that can take pictures, and rebuilt a "quicktube" for the purpose of this demonstration that doesn't already have a stabbing tip and cover on it. Until now my English communication must not have been quite up to snuff, so here's some pictures in lieu of 4000 words.

So, this is my entire quandary in empirical form. This is what I'm asking about. Either how do I make this stop happening, or how does this not present a very serious problem within the very accurate wording of the rules?

Thanks Forkbeard. Wondered when you'd show up. Just want to point out that I intend to grow and learn within this sport, which includes not only fighting but also culture, garb, armoring, tactics, and in this case, foamsmithing. I've also specifically used your terminology of quicktube in hopes that it could help avoid this turning into another soapboxing **** of a thread like most others that graze upon this subject. The point of this thread is mostly to help me and my backwoods realm with very little outside experience better understand the game, its rules, and the higher levels of foamsmithing tech out there.

I really hope nobody attempts to argue with you in this one, and I want to make it very clear that I am not.

stfu fork. he is asking a real question. haivng met the guy, he drove like forever to come to rhun in june, the last thing he needs is a quick tube lecturing.

the way you are placing that template is not the way it is checked, atleast not anywhere i have been. having seen pic 1, it passes. the angled placement of the template is not the purpose of the test, it is so people dont have skinny weapons that can go into peoples eye socket. yours should be fine unless where you are from they check it wrong, then direct them here.

Holy ****, you were at Rhun in June? I thought I drove the longest to get to that one. Kudos, sir.

Btw, you got a group going in London? I'm currently in exile in Buffalo, NY. PM me or find me on Facebook. I'd love to see what you guys are up to!

Fine! I'll be **** helpful, sheesh, Bo.
Your club would pass here. 3" is plenty. If you make you yips flat on the end, they will grab better when you stab and people will take more of them instead of feeling them as light grazes when they slip off.

Yeah, I think you do. It can't be helped though since Cu is my American doppleganger. You will find me adequately awesome when you meet me inevitably at next Okfest or Rhun opener though. Right now, I'm just planning on doing a bit of a tour to all of the realms within a days distance of me to pick up some experience.

Thanks for explaining this convention to me guys.
