Confusion on the specefications of the Red Sword

Postby xxRowanxx » Mon Mar 05, 2012 6:02 pm

So, I looked through the forum and could not find an answer to my question, so I am posting here. I want to make a red Sword of minimum length with a 12 inch or so handle, but I was told that the handle HAS TO be 1/3 or more of the total length. This was by my local belegarth group, so I looked it up and there is no mention in the weapons checking about a minimum handle length for Red Weapons, just a MAXIMUM length. Could someone please clear this up for me, thank you very much.

You are correct. The BoW does not specify any minimum handle length, only maximum lengths.
1.4.2.3. The maximum handle length for Class 2 Weapons is eighteen (18) inches or one-third (1/3) of the overall length, whichever is greater. This cannot exceed one-half (1/2) of the overall length.

Where is your realm? Is it a fairly new one? If so, having a few vets come and visit you guys might clear up any other misinterpretations. Hope this helps.

This rule has always confused me. BUT the way I read it you would need atleast 18" of handle for a minimum red. Here is my math:

48"/3 = 16". 16 < 18.

So in the rule since 18 is greater than 16, you would need an 18 inch handle for a minimum red.

however, I am not a Vet and could be misinterpreting the spirit of the rule.

I are retarded... I mistook minimum for maximum. So, yes 12" is fine. The max you could go is 18.

For the future, double checking the BoW will clear up a lot of those questions.

there is no minimal handle length. There is only max handle. It is always 18" or 1/3 of total weapon length whichever of the two is greater, from pommel to tip. pommel does not count as part of handle length.

edit:two beat me too it. thats what i get for hitting the reply 45 min after i type a response

First of all, I want to thank all of you. The only reason I posted, was that the book of war did not mention it and some people from my realm said that it had to be so long, thankfully not! And I am in the Babylon realm, no idea if it is new or not, I have just been practicing and not participating in much else yet.

Haha, I got caught. Nice catch Rowan. :)
Thanks for pointing this out to me.

Goes to show I don't read the BoW nearly as much as I should.

Be aware that shorter handles can result in failing flex.

When I made a batch of min reds with a 12" handle on a 1/2" core they failed for flex. So i cut off 3-6" of blade to make a 15-18" handle and they all passed.

The reason is not the weight change or altered flex, but that the flex test point is moved down the weapon 3-6" towards the tip (due to a longer handle).
