jav construction after the rules change

Postby Purgatory » Tue Mar 06, 2012 11:19 pm

i finally got some fiberglass and built 2 javs with the same instruction from the wiki. the problem seems tobe there too light. so i ask this, 1) and suggestions on how to build differently/weight where its only 16 oz and 2) has anyone else had these problems?

You can't really have a javelin that's "too light" if it conforms to all the BoW standards.

A 3/8" solid, round fiberglass rod will give you a cheap and perfect length core that will keep your weapon under weight and be within the flex rules.

Even better is the .602 kitespar. You can build a longer weapon that's suitable for stabbing as a short spear and its light as a feather. I've seen passing javs made on this coming in at 10 or so ounces.

This is the definitive version of how to build the perfect jav, IMO.

Is ".602 kitespar" larger in diameter or close to the same as 1/2" pvc?

.602" is the outer diameter, so it is larger than .5" pvc.

Don't use pvc

To my knowledge, most PVC is measured on the inside diameter.

The typical schedule 40 pvc sold as 1/2" actually has an outer diameter closer to 0.84 incheas ( about 7/8").

Check http://flexpvc.com/PVCPipeSize.shtml for more info.

So 1/2" pvc has a larger ID then .602 tubular fiberglass (kitespar).
The PVC would also be a little over twice as heavy as the kitespar for a given length. At 48" the 1/2" S40 pvc should be about 10 oz. or a little over.

i guess its that the wind seems to take it and play with it a lot on a brisk day. tough i will say that todays practice was very productive and the guys started to get the hang of throwing it. as for me i cant throw worth a squat so im thinking that its gonna be a adaptive thing.

for us, double boxing the fiverglass then razorying the corners to make a "round" feel, when covered in tape, tends to cut right through the wind, just enough weight.

congrats on making a jav.

Take it to practice to be inspected. Just from the picture, I wonder about the apparent pinched areas of haft padding by the can supporting the head and the pommel.

Also, if your jav is hitting too hard, take some of that hockey tape down from the tip so the open cell foam has room to expand laterally and absorb the blow.

Yes, after the rule change the first javelin I built was on 3/8" fiberglass, and I disliked how light it felt. I recently made a mk2 on bamboo (it works for larger spears & Amtgard ultra-lights, so figured I would give it a shot), and it's 14+1/2oz, no flex, and I didn't have to worry (to much) about going over weight. YMMV.

Given how you all continually steal it then seem intent on getting into grapples, it's probably only a matter of time.

However I imagine given the lax of flex I hear kitespar has, both materials would have similar issues.

Edit: following a 75+ person event on 4/22, the javelin is still fine (despite losing track of it on the battlefield for over an hour)
