What would you pay for a good full-sized axe?

Postby Threeleggedyoyo » Wed Apr 11, 2012 2:14 am

Hi all,

Have some experience foamsmithing and was considering selling a line of axes. Trying to figure out what the market is like.

Assuming it was well-made, about what would you pay for a new full-sized axe like the one in this video? (I didn't make this but mine are similar). How about if it were double-sided?

Thanks.

Probably not much more than zero.

Axes are unwieldly, slow, and terribly top-heavy. Not to mention it has only one striking surface, or two which would make it even heavier, and a huge flat. Plus they tend to break down faster than other weapons because of the way they must be constructed to conform to padding rules.

Anything an axe could do, a red sword or glaive could do much better. The only exception is the hook axes have which can be used to grab shields or weapons-- but spearhooks, of which I have seen a lot, are a better option because it gives you a sturdier, faster grab with a lighter weapon and much less of a worry of breaking your weapon down quicker.

Not a fan of axes. I've seen precious few axes used by experienced players, and virtually none used efficiently. Sure, they have a lol factor and maybe even a smidgeon of intimidation, but my advice... Divert your time and foamsmithing/fighting skills towards a line of weapons that has fewer drawbacks. I don't see a big market for axes like this.

The core is made from 4 pieces of fiberglass rod that are bound together. This gives a nice balance of flex and strength.

The head is a hard closed cell polyethylene foam surrounded by camping-mat style foam and then a softer cusion foam on the blade(s). I can also do a stabbing tip.

For the cover I'd use a material called ReCast. This is similar to Jenpro. It's similar to the white leatheryish material used in sneakers.

Is that Jenpro over the striking surface as well? I can't imagine that would be pleasant in any stretch.

Doesn't have to be. I'm still figuring out cost/materials on that part of be honest. But I have some of that from a previous project. The last axes I made just used poly cotton on the striking surface. I could use trigger or whatever else the buyer would want.

I might be willing to shell out 60 for a double-bitted one with a stabbing tip. But I'm axe-crazy these days.

* Most are not though. Your best market is gonna be the newbies. And I'd guess that only 1/2 of those newbies will have enough money to make it worth your while to make them for selling.

Also, how are you binding those cores?

You might have more success selling if your example wasn't being wielded in both a dangerous and ineffective manor. Find someone who knows how to use an axe on the field, give them one, and tape that. Not some anime wanabe kid.

Axes can be constructed safely and with little breakdown (no tips to blow out), you just have to know how to do it right, and you have to use materials with specific properties to make it work.

The only real advantage to them is that they hook around shields and are intimidating to newer people. Other than that, everyone else is right, they are less effective everywhere else.
