When is Plasti-Dip allowed?

Postby Þórðúlfr Aðalvaldr » Wed Apr 18, 2012 11:45 pm

Hey, long time fighter here, but new on the forums. I've used my fair share of plasti-dip in making weapons more attractive and decorating incidental padding area's but I was wondering about some more questionable uses. My main question is that of shields. Seeing as shields are not made for striking and act as incidental padding (sort of) can you plasti-dip shields to decorate them (and using fun foam)? On the other side of that argument the foam is thick enough to be striking for a reason and shield bashing is a common occurrence. That's my main curiosity with plasti-dip, but I was always wondering how much of a striking surface must be exposed before plasti-dip and fun foam is present... I'm trying to think of a better way to explain this in words but perhaps that makes sense. Should one or two layers of foam be free or even three? If this doesn't make sense I'll upload a picture inquiring this as well later. Any clarification on this would be great! Thanks.

Well as for the first part, yes, you can plastidip shields. I'm too tired to really focus on the rest so... there you go.

Excellent, thanks for the information. I suppose the second part of the question is a bit hazy. I'll be sure to clarify that in the morning.

the only place you can't plastidip is the striking surface of a weapon.

You can plastidip everything but the striking surface

If I'm reading it right, you're wondering how close to the striking edge you can get. Here
http://www.dagorhir.com/forums/index.php?topic=15445.0
is a tutorial on the Dag forum about plasti dipping; it's pretty all-inclusive, and it looks like he goes to about an inch from the edge on that axe. I'm not really familiar with plasti-dipped weapons, so I can't offer any real advice, but take a look at what Wynar posted.

And since you seem to be asking about how to pad and PD a shield there is a PD tutorial on my website as well as a Youtube 3 part video series. http://www.calistonarmory.com/index.php/tutorials/
